    im doing a project for school and it asks what are the problems associated with alternative energy sources.
    now, i know fossil fuels(coal, oil etc…) create greenhouse gasses but solar power, it seems there is nothing wrong with it

    A graph of how much revenue oil barons and the refining process would lose in relation the % of renewable energy as a total of energy production would be the most pertinent in modern society.

    Yes we think that you huge businesses should stop your hugely profitable exploits and instead spend billions investing in renewable energy. Afterall it’s only money isn’t the planets more important and I am sure you didn’t become Oil barons because you are incredibly selfish and want far more than everyone else even if it means millions have to starve and die and suffer.

    People wake up stop your governments from supporting these people renationalise your power industry invest in research and maximise renewable energy. Or sit back and let them charge you interest on the loans your govenment takes to buy weapons that you manufacture to send your own people to die for their profit and finacial security.

    Hurdles in using solar power:
    1. It’s affected by time(day/night), climatic conditions and geographic location.
    2. Initial Investments are high.
    3. All technological developments are made by keeping the conventional energy sources in mind. Thus, solar energy cannot be integrated easily with these technologies involving additional cost.

    Cons of nuclear energy:
    1. Disposal of radioactive waste material is not easy.
    2. Working with radioactive substance is hazardous and can cause genetic mutations in humans if they come in contact with such a substance.
    3. Controlled reactors are required for generating energy so that the fission chain reaction does not go out of proportion.
    4. Radioactive material is rare and available only in a few places of the world.

    Well your link is broken, but if you are talking about charge controllers and inverters then you probably want an explanation of how solar works.

    Basically the solar photovoltaic panels create electricity (ie: electrons moving due to the photons etc…). The electricity that is generated from a solar panel is DC (direct current) and a typical home uses AC (alternating current) so the inverter is the device which converts DC to AC so that solar generated electricity can be used in the home or business.

    Now before the electricity goes to the inverter, if the solar system has a battery backup, the electricity can be routed to a battery. This is where the charge controller comes into the picture. The charge controller will take a preset amount of electricity from the total output of the solar panel array and put that electricity (DC) into the batteries. Then when the battery is full the charge controller will realize this and stop pumping electricity to it. If you dont already know, its bad for a battery if you continue to charge it after it is fully charged. (degrades the life)

    Hope that clears it up.

    As far as solar applications. Now and days solar can be used pretty much anywhere for anything, even mission critical stuff like hospital backup. The technology is very well tested and the price has dropped to a point where it is a very feasible solution.

    Okay, I don’t think anyone’s taken this seriously yet, so…

    How about, hydro-electric, geothermal steam, wind turbines, augmentative passive solar, such as water heating and daylighting (somwhat different then solar lighting, or skylighting, although skylights count.) Also let’s not forget rain harvesting, and gray-water usage.these save water, and energy from a treatment, billing, delivery standpoint.

    Now that I asnwered the name other part: challenges, what happens when there is no sun/wind/water-flowing, if you have all of these, it won’t happen that often, but when it does, are batteries a practical solution? Won’t they eventually wind up in land-fill off-gasing? If you only use one or two of the 3 majors, what about when any of those aren’t available? Availability is still a big concern, hopefully that will be the next stock-market bubble and drive a massive influx of green-products.

    The common challenges with non-renewables, rather than starting from an environmental standpoint, how about we start with what they’re called. NON-RENEWABLE, eventually we will run out. It’s theorized that we’ve found all oil on earth, and will start a downward turn on production by somtime in 2008 or 2009. Aside from that, there’s the obvious global warming issues.

    Solar is not practical. Geothermal is not possible for a car. Wind is not practical either. Tidal energy is not possible. Any internal combustion engine will run on propane / methane / natural gas (they are all basically the same thing) with very little modification. The exhaust is a little better than 98% clean. Any internal combustion engine can be modified to burn hydrogen, with warm water vapor as the only exhaust. Any diesel engine can burn cooking oils. Much lower exhaust emissions. Electric cars are possible and do exist, but the costs are high and the maintenance is high. Fuel cell cars are here but are high maintenance and do not perform well in cold temperatures and refuse to operate in very cold temperatures (they freeze solid – water does that).
