I am thinking about getting an automatic backup power generator.?
I presently have oil heat in my home and have been told that fuel oil can be used to power the generator instead having to get bottled gas installed. Is this true?
I figure if I am going to do this, I’d like to power the entire household: furnace, sump pump, well pump, refrigerator, stove and lights. What is the price range for such a set up? Typically, is there a percentage paid up front and if so, how much? Can one contractor install the entire system: pad, generator, switch board, etc.? Am I better off buying the hardware and then just hire a contractor to perform the installation? If the contractor supplies the hardware, what is the typical mark-up, if any?
What is the best way to determine that the contractor is reputable and knows what they’re doing?
After being without power during two recent hurricanes I decided to scrap my regular generator and go with a whole house set up. This is operated on propane, will kick on when the power goes off and is capable of heating/cooling the entire house. Just be sure you get one large enough to operate the things you may need.
One contractor did the entire job for me and I have been extremely pleased with the work as well as the price. Total cost ran around $5500. but if you go through a period of 2 weeks without power you will know its worth the money.
If wired correctly the generator panel will provide isolation for all circuits on backup power. The main panel will not have to be turned off. I turn off all main panel breakers except for my living room lights to act as an indicator for when main power returns.

How to use backup generator with circuit box?
My parents house has a backup generator along with the circuit breaker box hard wired into the main circuit breaker box. The Generator box has Line/Off/Gen on switches. I know the switch stays in the line position when there is house hold power and the gen switch is used when they have no house hold power using generator. My question is does the main circuit breaker box master switch have to be off when using the generator?

I would get a 5KW Honda and be done with it. I’ll bet you will need to run additional things on the emergency circuit before it’s all over. Also that way the backup generator won’t be overloaded.
Get a good Xfer switch for it.

How much power a normal Desktop computer consumes? Help me to buy a Generator for power backup of PC.?
I am planning to buy a portable generator for which I have to calculate power requirement. We have 12 desktops with following configuration
1. 17″ LCD monitors with 35W power rating.
2. one Intel P4 3.0 GHZ processor (single core)
3. one 1GB DDR2 RAM
4. one 320 GB SATA HDD
5. one 400 W SMPS power supply unit (PSU)
6. 750 VA ups connected individually to each PC
we use these desktop for internet browsing and word processing. so they don’t have graphics cards. We don’t need to use printer, scanner etc.
I have estimated to consume maximum of 200W per PC so with safety factor I am planning to buy 3KW generator (3.3KW maximum output). Its KW not KVA (power factor 1) . We don’t have to power other electronics devices behind 2 DSL and ADSL routers and one switch with generator.
Will it be sufficient? What do you suggest ?
What other factor do I have to consider while buying a Generator except brand name?

I am looking for a self-recharging, always PLUGGED-IN BACKUP POWER (quiet running) GENERATOR. Automatically kicks on when power goes out and shuts off on return. A combination of solar/battery cells is preferrable but would consider alternatives if available. It is to be used in africa, the electricity is 220V. Also, the cost should not be prohibitive.
