The term “reverse” is used to describe the direction of rotation, not the direction of power flow. Three phase induction motors with variable frequency controllers can also operate as either motors or generators. There are no special provisions in the motor design to allow either motor or generator operation. Motors with permanent magnets do not need electronic controls to operate as generators. Permanent magnet motors with commutators can function as DC generators just by connecting the power leads to a load and turning the shaft. Motors with permanent magnets in the rotor can function as AC generators just by connecting the power leads to a load and turning the shaft. Such motors are called brushless DC motors or permanent magnet synchronous motors. Some such motors may contain electronic circuitry that might prevent them from easy use as generators.
All or most other types of motors can theoretically function as generators, but such operation may be difficult to implement and not very efficient. Commercially manufactured control units are probably not available, but designs may exist for some other types of motors.
