hi , my dad is currently planning a holiday house to build in the cedar mountains in Lebanon , and he is open to suggestions from us , so i always wanted a futuristic house , and i would like to know if it is possible to control all lighting in the house , and if possible also the electric outlets via a computer system ? Since we’ve heard that Lebanon is facing an electric crisis , electric and lighting control would save us a lot of trouble since we will have a mini electric generator in case of electric black outs . This generator would not be able to support the house’s planned electric demand ( 115 amperes ) so shutting off some lights and electric plugs , and dimming others would be really nice . can someone please tell me what we exactly need to know , and the average budget of such a project ?

hand cranked electric generators – output?
if i have 20 hand crancked generators, each produces 4 to 5 w and if i connect all and 20 people crancked them for 8 hours continuously – how much electricity will be generated, will it be sufficient to run 5 ceiling fans, 1 refrigerator, 6 numbers of 100 watts each bulbs in a home?

Okay, let’s do the math:
Assuming that 20 people could continuously produce 4W of electrical power for 8 hours without getting tired, here’s how it would shake out:
20 people x 4W = 80W of power
20 people x 5W = 100W of power
I could stop now at this point since the 8 hours now becomes irrelevant. It would take all 20 people doing all they could just to keep one 100W light bulb glowing brightly. The answer is clearly no.
A ceiling fan requres roughly 100 watts…to keep it running. It requires significantly more power momentarily upon start up, as does the refrigerator because they are electric motors.
A refrigerator, depending on size, age and efficiency draws roughly 800 – 1200 Watts…when running.
So, 500 watts for ceiling fans, 800 watts for the fridge, 600 watts for the light bulbs…you’re up to 2100 watts, or
700 people cranking hand generators.
I’d consider using compact fluorescents for your lighting.
the correct answer is D. one reason it took so long is Tom wanted DC electricity and it really wasn’t practical. A lot of debate went on before AC was adopted. Tom stood to benefit greatly if DC went through and was why he pushed it so.
Yes, but stay away from X10, it is very cheap but unreliable. We use the Insteon system and it works great. Really unlimited, depending upon what you want to spend. Check them out on smarthome.com. Best way, IMO, is to get a starter kit, then add to it.
