Save Energy With Home Made Wind Generator
Author: DebraD Barnes
High energy costs and an environmentally battered planet affect each one of us in one way or another. The fact of the situation is it is really quite possible for a good percentage of us to cut our monthly bill while helping to save the planet. Yes, kill two birds with a single stone just by turning to renewable energy and the best and practical technique to do that's arguably thru the use of home made wind generators.
Wind GeneratorHaving having said that , it's not always feasible or practicable. And are they inexpensive over the conventional form of power?
Wind power generation is based on the concept of energy conversion. Basically, the wind power turns the windmill which is attached to a turbine alternator or converter to provide electrical power. Traditional windmills are just water pumps but modern wind power generators are complete power systems that come with safety, high-wind survival, lightning and electrical overload protection and emergency shutdown features. The majority are equipped with options for storage and interconnection to area utility grids for credit or sale of overflow power.
Ideally, the house sits on a good-sized plot in a comparatively spaced-out rustic or sub-urban neighborhood. Surrounding wind resource is steady and even. The local supply grid also supports the interconnection of excess power for reverse credit or sale.
That is the reason why wind power generators are sometimes employed in mutual complement with another renewable energy source specifically solar power, sunlight supply of which intrinsically is also not continuous thru either.
It isn't rocket science to make wind energy. A handful of those DIY handbooks essentially do a particularly neat job in guiding even the fully uninitiated to construct their own wind power generators from nothing. It's possible to not only chop your power bills but also receive payment for the excess that is channeled back onto the utility grid. On top of that, there's the sensation of gratification from understanding that you have made a contribution to the green movement.

Original Wind Power Energy Ideas and Solutions

Most car alternators have rectifiers and regulators built in.
Main thing is, to turn the alternator at enough RPMs to generate the 14.5 volts it takes to charge the battery. Faster it turns, the more voltage you get — you won’t really need a regulator unless you’re generating more than 15.5 volts or so. A high quality deepcycle battery can take up to 16 or more.
You might need 800 or 1,000 RPMs — if your turbine doesn’t turn that fast you’ll need to rig an overdrive gear — pulleys and a drive belt would work.
home made wind turbine with a car alternator?
hi there
can i rig up a standard car alternator to a home made wind turbine to charge a car battery ?
..reason i ask is someone said something about a regulator ???
First off the turbine would power the alternator.
Doesn’t the turbine have a shaft that spins? Mount a pulley on the shaft, use a fan belt to connect the alternator.
How can I efficiently use a car alternator to power a home made wind turbine?
I have built my own home made wind turbine. How can I use a car alternator to effciently generate electricity? Any other DIY wind turbine info really welcome.
Is it the alternator? My wife drove the car home last night and said she ‘barely made it’ and it died on her?
The vehicle is a 1999 Subaru Legacy Sedan.
She made it to our house fortunately, but said the car died in the driveway. I went out this morning and it started right up. My experience with alternators is that usually the battery can run the car very temporarily, but once the car dies, the battery needs to be recharged or replaced or else the car shows no signs of power. I first thought it was the alternator because of my wife’s description, but wonder now if it could be something else. The battery and parking brake lights came on the other day. They shut off, but then came back on again. I let the car run for ten minutes in the driveway this morning and it ran strong. Any thoughts?
Sounds like the diodes in your alternator are burning out, they can be replaced. So you dont need to buy a new alt. I would suggest you upgrade the positive wire from your battery to alt, the negative wires from battery the block and chassis to 0 gauge this will allow for better current flow, takin the strain off the alt. Like the first bloke said your mechanic should stick to fixing the moving parts in cars. You dont need a cap, the 0 guage wire you are using to power the amp is fine and has nothing to do with your problem at hand.
I’ve mounted a few. For fresh water application, a car stereo is probably fine, but if you will be on salt water, I recommend getting a real marine stereo. If there is any chance of it getting wet, you can purchase protective stereo cases sold through the major marine stores which feature a gasketed front opening.
Any stereo should come with wiring instructions.
My guess is you will need a 12-volt battery, not only to power your stereo, but a VHF radio, running lights, anchor light, etc, depth sounder, fish finder, etc that you may have. Usually, what people do is install a simple breaker panel or fuse panel, mounted in a bulkhead that is wired to the battery and then wire any components to the plus and minus sides of the breaker or fuse panel. Fuse panels are not at all expensive.
For your 12-volt battery, you will likely need a battery case or somehow have to have it covered as well as secured. I recommend a marine deep cycle battery instead of a cranking battery for running electronics. You can charge it with a regular car trickle charger as you mentioned. What I did on one boat, was run some wires to cigarette type plug and mount this recepticle on the charger, so I didn’t have to access the battery all the time, – just plug it in.
Make sure any mounted speakers to not interfere with a ships compass if you install one. If your speakers will be outside, I recommend you go with marine speakers. I’ve used car or indoor speakers in the interior of boats.
The battery didn’t charge itself up overnight. If the car started right up it must have been good. A charged battery will run a car with a bad alternator for several hours, even with the headlights on.
Buy a $15 voltmeter.
Want to mount car stereo into home made boat, how to wire?
About to undertake a home built boat project.. and I was thinking about incorporating a car stereo head unit into the bulkhead.. how would I wire this to get it a supply of 12v juice? would using a car battery be not preferable since it wouldn’t have an alternator to work with it? would want to about hooking up a trickle charger to it after use?
Any other ideas and suggestions?
Amplifier made alternator go bad…how to fix this without buying a third alternator?
I have a 1000watt rms MTX amplifier hooked up to two 12″ mtx subwoofers that are rated at 600watt rms for the pair.
I keep amplifier turned down in order to match the subs.
i use 0guage wire running from the battery to the amplifer, i have no capacitor or anything of the sort.
my car is a Ford Mustang v6 2005…alernator is 135a
PROBLEM: when i hooked up the amplifier it killed my alternator in about 3 days. I bought another alternator and new alternator went bad in 4 hours (although i am told this may be due to just bad luck rather than because of the amplifier). When this happened i was halfway home from florida to missouri so i had to get another on the spot.
The mechanic that fixed it said its probably because my amp is sucking so much power its killing the alternator. He said i should get a 4guage wire and a capacitor instead of my 0guage. He said that everytime the amplifier hits low bass it sucks the car dry of power due to the large 0 guage wire.
i thought tho it didnt matter what wire you had…because the amp only pulls as much power as it needs either way. also i dont understand how a capacitor could save my alternator.
SOLUTION??? what do i need to assure i will not have this problem again??? I cannot buy another alternator, they are simply too expensive and many many people have told me my car should be more than capable of powering this amplifier with ease. Solutions?
Thanks
