They are really worth it. If you have the money put in an automatic type. If you have natural gas or propane use that for fuel it will save having to fuss with gasoline or diesel fuel.
I live in the city but still have a 5000 watt gasoline one I can hook up to the furnace, a couple of lights and the freezer. We had power out for about 14 hours during a ice storm and it worked great. but I had to keep refuelling it every 5 hours or so.
Should I buy a home standby generator?
I live 30 miles east of Seattle in an area that is frequently without power. Up until this year the outages were less than 48 hours but this year we have had repeated outages, one of which lasted 6 days after a stronger than usual windstorm. I had to scramble to find somewhere else to be. I lost several days of work, all the food in my refridgerator and freezer. At what point does it make sense to just install a standby generator?

Terminology may vary between manufacturers or dealers, but here is how I interpret the differences.
RV generator is mounted internally to the RV. Remote start, feeds power to selected RV circuits only. It is supplied fuel from the vehicle tank. Typically up to about 8kW.
Mobile generator is trailer mounted, can be much higher power, up to several hundred kilowatts. Fuel tank often mounted on the trailer.
Home standby generator is mounted on a concrete pad to the side of the house. Usually automatic start and transfer. Can be propane, natural gas or diesel powered, seldom gasoline. Power level typically up to about 15kW.
Portable generators are usually mounted with wheels for manually moving place to place. Usually gasoline powered, power levels up to about 15kW. Some have electric start. Electrical connection is via an outlet panel mounted to the frame.

What is the different between RV generator, mobile generator, home standby generator and portable generator?
I have to distinct between these generator. Do any website provide detail of all type of generator for purpose of study? My main intention is how to differentiate mobile generator from others.
They don’t make it easy to get tech support – I presume they want all support to be provided by the dealer / installer.
I did find the following information – I’m guessing you already know most of this but since I have it I’ll include it.

If you need warranty assistance their manuals say to call that same number you have to get the phone number to the nearest Generac Authorized Warranty Service Facility.

I have a Generac 5500XL portable generator for backup power supply. During an outage it has to be wheeled outside and connected to the transfer panel. I’ve been very pleased with its operation and reliability.
If your plan is to have an automatic start and transfer system you should shop around a bit more, compare prices, features, and reliability. Fuel source is a major consideration.

I want to get backup generator power if we have a blackout. The home standby systems are way too expensive. I see Briggs and Stratton has an Elite Series 09801 portable generator which CR says is good. However, I’m not sure how much it will cost to get a transfer switch installed by an electrician so i can just “plug” the generator’s electric power into the home electricity system. I don’t want to get ripped off and i’m not a millionaire. I went through the December 2001 ice storm and didn’t have power for 7 days… it was terrible…
to control the bare min items in ur house u need a good B/S 8000 watt gen. about $ 1,400.00 at lowes. lowes carries the transfer switch also, about $ 400.00
