Use any liquid in a closed cylinder. One side of the cylinder has to be made of a extremely stretchy material, with a hole in it.
a rod is places through the hole like a straw, with a maget near the hole. A repelling magnet is placed at the very center of the top, so that it keeps pushing the straw/rod, creating energy.

Aluminum conducts electricity just fine. Are the strips for commuting the electricity or are they part of the core, which does have to be magnetic? I can’t imagine a teacher thinking a pie plate would be magnetic these days or that one that was should be cut up, so I think your father is misunderstanding the need.
Can inexperienced builders make a linear motor?

We’re two highschool seniors with no electrical or magnetic experience. We want to build a maglev train with a linear motor. How much work/research/time would we need to construct and adapt this? Is it even possible for us to construct it with our very limited background?
Any other suggestions on how to magnetically propel this train would be highly appreciated!

How do I build a DC to DC converter from scratch?
I need to build a 25 volt to 40 volt, DC to DC converter for a cheap electric motor to run on. I don’t care if 40 volts burns it out because I will only run it for about 5 seconds and I have a bunch of them. The motor is rated for 25 volts.
I have to build it completely from scratch. This means it has to be made out of basic materials that can be found in an auto-shop. I’m also allowed to go to Radio Shack if I have to.
I’m using it to spin a propeller that will be mounted on top of a foam car. The car floats on a magnetic track (MAGLEV Track). The track is only 20 feet long and the car is about 3″ x 6″. It needs to be as lightweight as possible so it will go faster.
The car picks up electricity by having contacts slide on both sides of the track. The pickups supply about 25 volts also.

Wouldn’t you have to feed 25VDC to an inverter(AC), then step it up to 40V AC, then bridge rectifier, back to DC..

Here is a linear motor that I built when I was a high school junior in 1962. Unfortunately, it was not powerful enough to move itself, but it could throw a strip of aluminum several feet.

Does something need to be magnetic to conduct electricity?
In science class I am building a simple motor. One small but crucial part of the motor is made of a pie plate. My science teacher showed us how we could cut simple strips and wrap them upon the pencil. When I got home to construct this I realized that none of my pie plates were magnetic. My dad told me the it did needed to be, Does it?
