How do I build a bicycle generator for use with LED lights (I saw one used as an aide project for India)?
I would like to reduce my use of electricity by trying to go to solar power but I have limited resources (cash and knowledge). I would need free plans and instructions on how to build and simple procedures for maintenance, care, and use of the system. I also need any safety precautions I would need to follow to implement this system. I have no mechanical background so I need layman’s terms so I can understand what I am going to be doing. This is being done for areas in India or Pakistan with no electrical power so must be cost efficient but there was no further information available to my knowledge on the program I saw.

A few questions about conversion from mechanical to electrical energy.
For the purposes of this, assume that I have the mechanical energy, by way of a crank, which will provide the energy.
First part of the question is, the generator built on this page (see link below) is obviously very basic. What would make it more powerful? The number turns the wire does seems to be one option. I presume the size of the magnets is also a factor, or does bigger magnets = more weight to crank = benefit of larger magnets negated?

I have to help my kid with a science fair experiment. He is building a simple generator. The magnet is turned manually. He has to figure out how many amps are produced and at what voltage. I think this is a product of the magnet’s rpms?
Please keep in mind that I have no background in electrical engineering whatsoever. This generator is very very simple…..it is a magnet (which is turned by hand) and copper wire is turned around the magnet, then connected to a light bulb.

You need a DC motor that will work as a generator, first.

Most seismic, wind, hydro sources of energy (not all) generator a direct current. This current has to be converted into a voltage regulated output, consequently, only have the job is done when you accomplish the d.c. generation. yes, the faster you crank, the more power/voltage you will get out. It is limited by the bearings, heating in the wire, saturation in the magnet core, and voltage breakdown in the wires.
Any rechargable battery will do, look online. An automobile battery is one possiblity, another is a NiCd.
Be careful how you charge batteries. Overcharging can ruin a battery, and in extreme cases cause it to explode, although I doubt you can do that with manual cranking. Research the battery and battery type to determine charge rates.

I doubt that there will be enough power to light a bulb-depends on how good of a generator is made.
The output will depend on the strength of the magnets, proximetry to the coils etc. Frequency will depend on the speed.

You need a dynamo it has a tiny wheel inside which touches the wheel and when the wheel rotates the dynamo’s wheel rotates.
