    It’s simple really – take an iron core (a nail or bolt will do) and wind wire around it to form a coil. Energize the coil and you have an electromagnet.

    Bigger is better. For any particular geometry, the magnetic power of a copper-wound electromagnet is proportional to the square root of the electrical power dissipated in it. You can choose to use lots of turns of fine wire, with a high applied voltage and low current, or a few turns of heavy wire, with a low voltage but high current. So, you choose your wire size based on the power available and how much of it you wish to use.
    The other thing you can play with is the geometry. Adequate iron to carry the magnetic field to the workpiece will be helpful.

    Use the largest iron core diameter you can manage.

    Heating a large bolt to red heat for 15 minutes will turn it into what’s called soft iron. This means it won’t permanently hold the magnetic influence you provide.

    While it’s hot and malleable, bend it into a horseshoe shape. This will give you two poles and so double the strength.

    Use a gauge of insulated copper wire that can handle the current you intend to use without overheating.

    The more turns you can wind, the greater the magnetic field, BUT there’s a catch.

    The catch is that the magnetic strength can’t increase above a particular value set by the saturation point of the metal you use. At this point the core is regarded as being “saturated.”
