The car industry is constantly trying to come up with new and useful ways that we can save the environment while staying using the cars we have become so used to. So why can they not develop a car that runs on solar power? The sun is always there, therefore the energy source would never be exhausted, so what is making this so difficult?
To make a solar powered car, it would have to have a large, flat surface area to really make the most of the sun, and due to aerodynamics, this would be unable to reach the speeds we desire. Also, it would be considerable wider than a normal car so roads would have to be looked at, at great cost to the governments.
Night and weather complications.
Especially in the UK,. This would pose a bit of a problem. What happens on the days that there is little sun, or to someone driving at night when the power went low? Realistically, a solar powered car would also have to have some sort of backup option, defeating the object in the first place.
Cost.
Although sunlight is free, the cost to make the vehicle would be a lot higher than it currently is to make cars, so we would be looking at a far higher purchase price than what we are used to. Although this saving would be won back when people didn't have to pay for petrol, it would be a much larger cost.
While driving on Britain's roads, make sure you have a valid Car Insurance policy.

I’m not sure solar cars will ever be practical, especially in places that don’t get enough sun. However, extending your question to other alternative technology, like hybrids or the future possibility of cars that run on hydrogen, the price of technology tends to come down when mass production is possibility. With every new technology, they start out as an expensive innovation and eventually become a commodity, priced for the common man. Over my life I watched this happen with calculators, VCRs (they once were cutting edge, now they are over the hill), CD players, DVD players, etc. It’s happening now with HDTV. A long time ago cars were only for rich people, then Henry Ford created the assembly line and the Model T and regular people started to buy them. Once a technology is proven, someone will figure a way to produce it for less and prices will come down.
1. Minimize you car’s weight so it can accelerate more quickly.
2. Gear down the motor so that its available torque maximizes RPM.
3. Increase the intensity of your light source — OR, capture more light on the panel by adding pointed reflectors (“solar concentrators”)
well if its going down hill increasing the weight might help, making the car itself more arodynamic might have negligable effects. trying reducing the size of the wheels. big wheels provide more power but end up being slower, small wheels have less power but are a lot quicker.
