Magnetic Dynamo
Author: john P Paul
The invention of magnetic dynamo in the early 1800's laid the path for several other scientific discoveries, such as, AC electric motor, AC alternator and rotary converter. A magnetic dynamo is a device that can generate electricity. In fact, over the years several people have built their own versions of magnetic dynamos. It works by converting rotational mechanical energy into electric energy. The principle involved utilizes the relationship between electricity and magnetism. When an electricity conducting material is moved in a magnetic field, it carries a charge of electric current.
In a dynamo, coils of wire are rotated in a magnetic field to produce current. The stationary structure responsible for providing magnetic field is called the stator and the pair of winding arms in that field are called armature. Small dynamos use magnets to provide the magnetic field whereas bigger dynamos use electromagnets for the purpose. When a dynamo is supplied with electric current, it can function as an electric motor. When two or more dynamos are used simultaneously for one power source they are made synchronous using a jackshaft, because otherwise, the more powerful dynamo will cause the weaker one to function like a motor. This can lead to uncontrollable reverse-spinning motion in the weaker dynamo, which causes an imbalance.
Today, magnetic dynamos are referred to as generators, though at present, they are not as popular as they were several years ago. This is because most devices today utilize alternating current to run. However, dynamos are still used to run certain devices that require input of low voltage DC. They are used to power lamps, phones and radios. After alternating current was deemed useful, dynamos were referred to as commutated DC electric generator.
You can build your own magnetic dynamo using simple materials from hardware store to produce small amounts of current.
