    How can I make an electric generator that does not use a permanent magnet?
    There are lots of places to find methods of making small generators that use permanent magnets, but I have always wondered how they do it when there aren’t any such magnets available.

    How can you make an electric generator?
    I own 5 acres of property. Other then my gas generator, I don’t have electricity on it. I have a travel trailer on it with an electric fridge and I love camping there. In Home Depot, I have seen a converter that you hook up to your car battery and I have also seen what appears to be an electric generator. I asked someone at Home Depot how long the “electric generator” would run a small fridge. He told me it wouldn’t be a long time, but suggested using a marine battery with a converer. I am thinking I could purchase several batteries, a converter and a battery charger. Does that sound like somethink that might work?
    I do have a 5000 watt gas generator on my property. I just don’t want to have to run it all the time if I am camping for several days or a week at a time. We all know the prices of gas these days.

    Sounds like a fun project, but there are some challenges. I suggest buying a new or used generator or getting a scrapped one and rebuilding rather than trying to make your own.

    But, to give it a shot anyway, check the power output of the engine online. I recall claims the 50 cc put out 5 HP, so the 70cc should be able to do 7. This seems a little high, but maybe not.

    Look at the power curves for the engine, and determine where on the curve you want to be. Max power is typically at the top end speed, probably 8,000 rpm or so for this engine. You might want to back off quite a bit, because the generator has to be run at the same speed all the time, no matter how much load is on it. Running wide open all the time, the engine won’t last long.

    Get a generator, perhaps from a scrapped unit. Usually, the engines put out about 1 HP for each 500 watts of possible load, so 3500 watts max for yours. OK to use bigger generator than you need, won’t hurt anything.

    Look at the speed of the generator, determine the speed you plan for the engine, and select v-belt pulleys or some type of gears so the generator runs at its normal speed (normally 3600 rpm) when the engine is at your design speed.

    Now the hard part. You have to figure out a way to keep the generator speed almost exactly at the design speed. Most small generators use lawn-mower type engines rated at 3600 rpms, and have a governor on the engine to do this. Some of the Honda generators use electronic controls to change engine speed as needed, and electronics to make AC with the right specs.

    You go to GE or Siemens and buy one. A 30 MW generator is huge. The voltage is irrelevant, it’s the power that counts.

    Most all large generators are AC, since that is easier, does not require commutators (always a problem) and the AC can be sent to a transformer to generate any voltage needed.

    Generators generate electrical power from mechanical power, and motors do the opposite.

    Sure that will work. With two marine batteries and lights you will have to recharge them about every 2-7 days. You will need to use a gas generator to recharge the batteries. Or you can buy something like a 100 watt solar panel to recharge them.

    Most rv’s work like this. If you drive with your camper a lot you might look into running some lines from you main truck battery to your marines so you can charge them all at the same time. But remember to put in a switch to turn it off so you can’t drain all of them and get stuck somewhere.

    Large commercial generators do not have permanent magnets. The rotating field is magnetized via slip rings that feed current into it’s windings. The current is generated by the exciter which is either a small generator attached to the end of the shaft or, in modern applications, an electronic SCR converter.
