How is electricity generated comercially : where does the magnetism for the “field magnet” come from?
Small generators, such as on a bicycle have permanent magnets that create a magnetic field which when broken by the rotating armature yield electric current. If large scale generators use electromagnets for the field, where does the electricity to initially charge the “field” come from ? It seems like perpetual motion at work here.
Using magnets to create perpetual motion?
Let’s say I have permanent magnets set up in a sort of half sphere with the inside of the sphere pointing up and it laying flat on a table and then I have a ball with, let’s say, half the radius of the half sphere. The ball has the same permanent charge as the half sphere. I place the ball over the half sphere. The ball and half sphere would repel each other and the ball would remain still and afloat. If I sent the ball on a spin, wouldn’t it continue to spin ignoring air friction? I’ve always heard that perpetual motion is impossible on Earth, so what’s wrong with this scenario? Would it even work? Would the ball’s rotation slow down?

Could someone explain how it works? Is it breaking the laws of thermodynamics?
There is a small amount of residual magnetism in the iron of the generators armature that is used at start up to generate a small voltage. This small voltage is then feed to the field windings where the current flow produces magnetism in the windings. The additional magnetism then creates additional voltage which creates additional current flow in the field windings…. This process continues until the output voltage of the armature is such that the voltage regulator takes over to limit output voltage by regulating field strength.
Its not perpetual motion but rather a positive feedback…..
If you reverse the residual field polarity or reverse the field windings then you can have a negative feed back in which the field build up opposes the residual field which prevents the generator from building up voltage. If this were to happen then you either have to reverse the field winding to achieve positive feedback (build up) OR flash the generator with a battery to establish a field from which to build up voltage. Reversing the field winding is only necessary after servicing the generator as the windings can be incorrectly reconnected. Flashing a gen with a battery can be a more common practice especially when dealing with generators that sit idle for long periods and can have their residual magnetism “run down” .
Once a generator is in operation the “residual magnetism” will be rejuvenated and subsequent restarts should not require flashing.
How strong is the most powerful permanent magnet ever?
I’m working on a possible plan for a “perpetual-motion” machine. Please do NOT(!!) say anything about perpetual-motion machines and how it’s impossible and all that. All I want to know is the strength of the strongest permanent magnet possible. It doesn’t have to be natural, as long as it is permanent (not electric). Would such a magnet have enough force to repel another small magnet (opposite poles facing of course) upwards about 12 in. against the pull of gravity?
In other words: The smaller magnet can kind of “levitate” 1 feet above the big one.
Please DON’T tell me how my setup wouldn’t work and stuff, just tell me what the strongest permanent magnet is capable of.
Physics-Is an atom(or any other object of mass) a perpetual motion machine?
Since it attracts all other objects of universe via the gravitational pull? What does it expend to create this pull? Also what about a permanent magnet?
There seem to be two possibilities here:
1. He has rewritten the laws of physics and will soon be the most famous man on earth.
2. It is a fake being driven by something under the table

1.25 T – strength of a modern neodymium-iron-boron (Nd2Fe14B) rare earth magnet. A coin-sized neodymium magnet can lift more than 9 kg, can pinch skin and erase credit cards.
Second reference has a source that claims “strongest magnet every manufactured” but they don’t supply any specs.

In theory perpetual motion is possible. If the kinetic energy in an object can be maintained it will keep moving.
The only problem with that is that there will always be some sort of friction. And if you were to be able to create a perfect vacuum it would eventually stop spinning because it will be affected by magnetism.
The mere presence of a force does not require the consumption of energy. So no, these forces do not provide ‘free’ sources of energy.
