If noise is your biggest concern then you want a Honda Generator. There is nothing quieter! But you pay $$ for that quietness. there are gens out there that start a 199.00 but they are quite loud The last time I checked A mid range Honda gen started at about 600.00
How much power do you require while camping? Not much point in having a quiet generator that doesn’t supply enough power for your needs.
Honda has the lowest noise generators that I’m aware of, and make a very nice product.
There are Chinese knockoffs on the market, trying to clone the Honda lineup. I haven’t heard much good about them, and suggest you avoid them when possible.

Much of the noise from small engines comes through the engine housing. Reducing exhaust noise will help but it isn’t the only source. I’m not sure how you plan to do this in a practical manner. The heated exhaust gases will gradually boil off the water and the exhaust pipes will corrode badly. Use large diameter pipe to prevent excessive back pressure. If you prevent water from entering the muffler and back to the engine I can’t see any harm being done, but don’t really see much potential benefit to what you suggest either. It is for use at dog shows. It would be used to run a fan or heater and a big blow dryer. I need to lift and carry it by myself. Cost is important. Are there any decent ones in the $400 range? Is that a crazy question?

Im not going what would be considered traditional camping. I am going to Spirit West Coast and the “campgrounds” are packed and your neighbors are very close so I need a quiter generator for that.
Honda by all means. I know they cost a lot, but we have tried other generators like coleman and they are junk. Just buy a Honda. Mine only weighs about 40 lbs and is sooo quiet. Chain them up to a tree or your RV too as they have been known to walk away.
