Sleepzone Hostels to Invest €100k in Renewable Energy Systems in Connemara
Author: Chita
Sleepzone Hostel Group, with three large properties in Galway City, Connemara and The Burren, has announced plans for a substantial environmental investment in its Connemara hostel, which overlooks Killary fjord near the village of Leenane. Over €100k is being invested in solar panels and biomass fuels for Sleepzone Connemara, following an environmental audit by Sustainable Energy Ireland (SEI) late last year. JMK Renewable Energy Systems have been contracted to install over 30 solar panels in Sleepzone Connemara along with infrastructure which will allow for the use of biomass fuels, and work is now underway.SEI have part-financed the project through a grant under its ‘ReHeat’ programme which provides assistance for the deployment of renewable heating systems. The bulk of the financing is being provided through a combination of the company’s own resources and bank borrowing. Initial guidance by SEI advised the use of compact fluorescent efficient lighting in Sleepzone Connemara, which the hostel undertook immediately, reducing their energy costs by 35pc. Further recommendations for water conservation will be addressed during the second phase of the ongoing implementation of Sleepzone’s environmental policy. Electricity for both rural locations as well as for the Galway city centre property – Sleepzone Galway – is already wind-generated, supplied by Airtricity.
Sleepzone Director Ronan Garvey acknowledges that investment in environmentally-aware systems is costly, but says “with recession looming we are understandably aware that the long-term energy cost savings of this project are considerable. However as two of our three properties are located in areas that are world-renowned for their scenic qualities, we are also very conscious of our environmental responsibilitiesâ€.
Sleepzone Galway, which opened in April 2001, has been voted ‘Best Hostel in Ireland’ (2006) and ‘7th Best Hostel Worldwide’ (2004) on Hostelworld.com, the internationally dominant online booking engine and information resource. It was joined by Sleepzone Connemara in March 2005 – a hunting lodge dating back to the 1800’s which has been fully converted to a 110-bed hostel combining dorms and the ever-more popular private en-suite rooms. The group added Sleepzone - The Burren in March 2007 after the purchase of a 3-star hotel and the alteration of some rooms to dorms.

Sure, why not. Lot’s of times abandoned military bases are turned over to the closest community nearby. It is up to the city council’s, county and state gov’ts to decide what to do with them. Research the news for base closures, and contact the city hall of the town’s who took over their ownership.

That’s all they use cardboard for is to make it pretty so it costs more and so it appeals to kids. You have very good opinion on it. I would rather recycle it myself because the box protects the cereal bag itself.
271.4 meters length, 271.4 meters width, and 271.4 meters height.
Which is 0.27 km length, width, and height.
Which 0.27km is about the length of 3 football fields.
Recycling and renewable energy?
I just recently had a colonoscopy…the preperation tastes foul…anyway, part of the preperation was 4 tablets each one smaller than the head of an eraser. The cardboard packaging they were in measured 4″x6″, why? A walk around your local supermarket further highlights the problems that we have as a wasteful culture. Why do we have to pack cornflakes in a bag and then package it in a box, for the end user to take out the cornflakes from the bag and the box and put them into some type of plastic container. Wasteful, the “packaging” if we are green, goes to a recycling center and if we are not goes into the trash for the landfill where it sits and rots and leaks gas and seeps down into the water table. We, you and I, don’t need the packaging, it is just marketing hype, what they advertise on the box they can print on the bag. All of the supermarkets have a cardboard compactor, as a first step lets leave our excess packaging at the supermarket so that they can get rid of it!!!
renewable energy research center?
hi everybody,
i am an architecture student and have sellected the deisgn thesis as research center for renewable energies….. the instittute will have labs, training, awarness, exhibit etc……i want to kno where such other institutes are located in around maharashtra bangalore delhi or gujarat……..so i can visit them as part of case study
Could closed military instillation’s become centers for renewable Energy?
Radar sites on mountain tops are idle. So are dozens of military bases. These sites cover many acres and have good wind and sun exposure. Adjacent neighborhoods should be allowed acesss and permision to build facitlties that would allow the communities self reliance. The second part of the question, how should we go about it?
What is the area of 20 million m³: 20 million cubic meters? How can I calculate volume I have to a cube?
I am trying to create an image of how much oil, gas and coal we are using daily, and superimpose this image of these three containers in the center of any city, in order to get people’s attention to why we need to transform our energy production from fossil fuels and nuclear energy to alternative and renewable energy sources.
What major/minor to take if I want to create a business centered around renewable energy?
