Solar Renewable Energy in High Demand

Author: Kelly J. Kim

Do you have renewable energy career aspirations?  If so, sunny California might be the place for you. According to a recent New York Times article, California has a capacity that exceeds 500 megawatts of solar power at peak periods – which is the same as a major power plant.

California has been a longtime proponent of solar energy use, which is a major component of the green movement currently sweeping the United States.  A recent report from the Interstate Renewable Energy Council supports this fact. Their study shows that solar capacity in California increased by a third from 2007 to 2008, and now represents about two-thirds of the national total.

Career opportunities in the green industry are increasing, especially for those with renewable energy training.  Plus, the need for knowledgeable green workers is made even greater by President Obama’s 0 billion dollar initiative to increase renewable energy use nationwide.

California’s reputation as a leader in solar energy use is reinforced by the national focus on renewable energy, and with a greater demand for energy efficiency, specially trained solar energy workers will be in high demand.

What’s more - California has two, statewide programs that offer rebates and incentives to those with rooftop solar panels.  With savings from these government programs, not to mention the long-term savings on property cooling/heating bills, California residents are in a win-win situation to seek the services of a solar panel installer.

California is leading the solar power movement, but several states are hot on its heels.  For example, New Jersey is second to California with 70 megawatts. New Jersey also has a rebate program for qualifying commercial and residential customers who utilize solar arrays.

There’s no doubt about it – California offers opportunity to those seeking careers in the green industry. However, if ‘California Dreaming’ isn’t your thing, don’t despair – green opportunities are available worldwide.

Start off on the right track by enrolling in a green career training.  With a firm background in emerging technologies, you’ll gain a competitive edge in a growing industry that needs you.

Where in the world is there undergraduate degrees in renewable energy and/or sustainability?
I’ve already found a few, such as the University of New South Wales – Photovoltaic/solar energy degree. However, I would like to fully know all my options for undergraduate degrees in solar energy/wind energy/renewable energy etc. Most other programs I’ve found have been standard engineering degrees, which lead to graduate work in the subject. Any university in the world is the scope, as I’m not committed to residing with the United States.
