The Differences Between Clean Energy, Renewable Energy, and Alternative Energy
Author: Anna
To many people, the differences between "alternative energy," "renewable energy," and "clean energy," might not be obvious. But each term is unique and has its own individual definition. These three terms are not all exactly the same.Alternative Energy
When we speak of alternative energy, we refer to sources of usable energy that can replace conventional energy sources (usually, without undesirable side effects). The term "alternative energy" is typically used to refer to sources of energy other than nuclear energy or fossil fuels.
Throughout the course of history, "alternative energy" has referred to different things. There was a time when nuclear energy was considered an alternative to conventional energy, and was therefore called "alternative energy." But times have changed.
These days, a form of "alternative energy" might also be renewable energy, or clean energy, or both. The terms are often interchangeable, but definitely not the same.
Renewable Energy
Renewable energy is any type of energy which comes from renewable natural resources, such as wind, rain, sunlight, geothermal heat, and tides. It is referred to as "renewable" because it doesn't run out. You can always get more of it.
People have begun to turn to this type of energy due to the rising oil prices, and the prospect that we might one day deplete available sources of fossil fuels, as well as due to concerns about the adverse effects that our conventional energy sources have on the environment.
Of all the different types of renewable energy, wind power is one which is growing in its use. The number of users who have some form of wind power installed has increased, with the current worldwide capacity being about 100 GW.
Clean Energy
"Clean energy" is simply any form of energy which is created with clean, harmless, and non-polluting methods.
Most renewable energy sources are also clean energy sources. But not all.
One such example is geothermal power. It may be a renewable energy source, but some geothermal energy processes can be harmful to the environment. Therefore, this is not always a clean energy. However there are also other forms of geothermal energy which are harmless and clean.
Clean energy makes the less impact on the environment than our current conventional energy sources do. It creates an insignificant amount of carbon dioxide, and its use can reduce the speed of global warming - or global pollution.
As you can see, alternative energy, renewable energy, and clean energy are very similar. But it is important to know that there are differences.
There are many actions which can be taken, to help reduce the greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Some of these steps can be taken in your own home. Many clean energy solutions can can be easily installed, and some kits are quite affordable.
Carbon emissions and other forms of pollution are not only created by heavy industrial factories. They are created in the common household as well. Energy efficiency has become an important aspect of our lives.
It's important to start making changes now; if we want to save our planet for our children, for the flora and fauna of the Earth, and for the future of mankind. Clean energy, to be exact, can make a big difference.

The whole idea of energy independence is one that big business corporations have been against since the 70s. The truth is that the foreign oil producers are cooperative partners with American oil companies and they have been for many decades now. In the 70s there was an energy revolution emerging from the jump in oil prices and while steps were taken by our government to invest in infrastructure projects, our beloved oil industry was able to halt the funding of these projects just long enough while their Arabian Oil counterparts lowered the price of oil, calming many angry Americans. You have to understand that American Oil Corporations do not have our national interests and you would be a fool to think that they did. A Corporation serves one purpose, and that is to profit for its shareholders. Chevron, BP, Shell, etc are not government entities buddy. We live in America and the last time I checked we live in the land of the free, we cannot look to the government to provide us with cheaper prices because we’re not happy with the rising costs of oil. If that was the case then this would not be the Great United States of America. The oil companies are not the enemy, foreign governments are not the enemy, there are no terrorists and there are no countries, the only threat to the average American is his own ignorance. Americans are falling behind when it comes to intellect.
Look up T. Boone Pickens. He is a former oil man and corporate raider who has a ton of money and wants to do wind farms all over the place.
He became famous in the 1980′s be acquiring big oil companies then selling them off (in whole or in part) and made a ton of money.
In the first place, there’s no such thing as a ‘renewable energy source’, Planetnoid. It’s a misnomer. All energy on Earth, for all intents and purposes, is derived from the sun. Even the sun’s not renewable. Duh!
The problem with the Go Greenies is most of them were educated in the U.S. Government Public School System. And in extreme cases, were endoctrinated in Commie Colleges all across this land.
Information about schools will be found below.
NASA did an experiment in space that showed that this idea might work. They strung a wire out from the shuttle and it developed a strong voltage just from passing through the earth’s field. But then it burned out.
My fear is that if we actually did build an earth generator as described it would affect the rotation of the earth. You can’t get something for nothing. You have to put mechanical energy into a generator to get electrical energy out of it. In this case the mechanical energy comes from the rotation of the earth. The earth is just coasting so extracting energy to make electricity would cause the rotation to slow down. Do we really want that?
Why don’t we use the Earth’s magnetic field to generate endless electricity for the whole world?
Some time ago a man named Nicholae Tesla realized that the Earth is a huge electrical generator. He said that if humanity could create a copper cable long enough to circumnavigate the earth from South pole to North pole and back, we could use the power generated naturally by the earth’s magnetic field and have enough power to light a billion New York-sized cities. I assure you this is true. So my question is really this: Why do you think we haven’t we decided to use the most efficient form of renewable energy? At this point in history, we have the technology and engineering ability to achieve it, so what’s the hold up?
For those of you questioning whether it’s even possible. It is. I can be done from orbit at this point in time and spinning motion necessary is already achieved by the flow of molten iron under the earth’s crust that generates the field in the first place. I do acknowledge that it would require more than one loop, but still is more feasible than a manned mission to Mars. Just not as sexy.
Important Person in Renewable Energy?
I am planning to write an essay for history day, and I need one important figure in history that has made an impact. Since my topic in English is Renewable energy, I also need to have someone relate to that for history day.
Basically I’m asking is if there is anyone important associated with renewable history in any way. I couldn’t find anyone myself.
Who are some important people in renewable energy history?
I need to do a biography on a significant person in renewable energy, but I can’t find anything on the Internet. Could you please send me a site where I can find a biography?
Why is the claim that “energy independence” is an ideal never challenged?
The whole idea of “energy independence” is nothing more than protectionism, that old view of the economy that was discredited by Adam Smith back in 1776. Protectionism certainly benefits inefficient domestic producers (in this case, the producers of uneconomic forms of energy) at the expense of more efficient foreign producers (in this case, foreign oil producers) and the consumers (who have to pay higher prices for inferior products). These inefficient forms of “renewable” energy were used prior to the 20th century, but lost on the free market to petroleum.
Businesses that produce efficient products never resort to lobbying Congress for protectionist legislation, because they would win either way and because protectionist legislation leads to retaliatory legislation abroad. In fact, protectionism has a long history of fomenting wars. It is no coincidence that prior to both World War I and World War II, waves of protectionism broke out around the world. In the US, Herbert Hoover’s Smoot-Hawley tariff was a large part of the reason why the Great Depression became the Great Depression.
Were we ever to achieve “energy independence,” the likely result would be a weakening of our national security. The people of the Islamic world already hate our country because of our role in creating and propping up the Israeli government over the years. They already hate us for overthrowing their governments and for stationing troops in their region. The fact that we trade with a few Islamic nations is the one thing keeping these nations from turning into state sponsors of terrorism against our country. We trade with the nation of Saudi Arabia, which has prevented the government of Saudi Arabia from being captured by al-Qaeda like many other Middle Eastern governments.
No nation can isolate itself economically from the rest of the world and expect to prosper. Just look at Cuba, North Korea, and the Gaza Strip. It is long past time for politicians to stop trying to isolate us from the global energy market.
Are there any trade schools for renewable energy technician?
I would really love to study renewable energy to be a tech but i don’t want to go to a 2-4 year college where i have to take history… I want to learn to become a renewable energy tech i don’t know how knowing when columbus sailed is going to help me in that. I know there is one in Colorado but I’m looking for one closer to west texas. It would be even better if there was one I could start online as I will not be able to relocate for a couple of years.
