The Importance of Renewable Energy Resources
Author: James Bratley
The modern lifestyle depends tremendously on the use and existence of fossil fuels. With levels of these fuels constantly decreasing, we should act now to become less dependant on fossil fuels and more dependent on renewable energy sources. The decreasing levels of fossil fuels isn't the only reason why we should begin to use renewable energy. Pollution is becoming a huge problem in many countries around the world, especially the developing world. With carbon emissions at an all time high, air quality can be very low in some areas, this can lead to respiratory diseases and cancer.
The main reason to switch to cleaner energy production methods is the global warming aspect. The more carbon dioxide we pump into the atmosphere, the greater the effect becomes. We can't just stop using fossil fuels thinking that global warming will go away, but we can slow down and dilute the effects of global warming through the wide spread use of renewable energy resources.
There are many natural energy sources out there, but you have to decide which method is best for you, as all of these sources depend on your current environment.
The installation of a solar panel or a wind turbine to boost every homes power supply would be an amazing step forward. Some governments are in the process of supplying solar panels to hundreds of households to test this method of energy saving.
A technology set to be very important in the future is geothermal energy. With geothermal energy, you are able to extract heat from within the earth and transform it either into a hot water system, or if there is plenty of this energy, a geothermal power plant. Huge amounts of money have been flowed into research of this method, especially in recent years, in order to make the current technology more effective.
So there we have the reasons why we should turn to renewable energy resources which are more than likely to play a very vital and important role in our future society.

YES! The US is a world leader in technology. The government is too caught up in the revenues generated by Oil taxes to want to push anything else….especially Renewable sources. However, they could make it a cheap investment for the tax-payers, and could still produce high revenues by promoting it’s use, and conversion. They have to see the forest for the trees. We as a country could free ourselves from the grip of the oil nations, and still make a mint selling the technology.
Can’t find figures for Maine.
USA-wide, there is far more wind power than solar power:
http://www.maine.gov/oeis/docs/OEIS%20Comp%20Energy%20Plan.pdf
Over 34,000MW USA-wide, with 175MW in Maine:
http://www.windpoweringamerica.gov/wind_installed_capacity.asp
They think solar across the US could hit 28GW by 2016:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_power_in_the_United_States#cite_note-0
And that’s with very fast growth and most of that will be in the sourth.
So I’m going to go with wind.
Yes, a lot of countries are wasting money on wind and solar.
The only ‘renewable’ sources of power that are actually reliable enough to be worth having or hydroelectricity and geothermal power but not all places have the geology needed for them and hydro has something of a bad reputation (well deserved given the environmental impact and what happens when dams fail).
As for who uses the most renewables, Norway has a lot of hydro and Iceland uses geothermal extensively. Denmark has managed to get about 20% wind capacity but hasn’t even shut down any coal power plants and at the moment pretty much just sells the wind power to Norway really cheap where it’s used to pump water uphill.
I signed up for wind power and paid 2 or 3 cents/KWh more than the local utility company. It’s only a few dollars a month more, and I’m locked in to that price for a year so if rates rise, I’m protected at least through the 12 months.
Even if the physical electrons from the windmill are not carried directly to my house, the willingness of myself and others to pay more for cleaner energy shows the power companies that a demand is there. If they want to profit from it, they will fill the demand. Some power companies will stick their head in the sand and continue business as usual and fight the changing times. The auto industry comes to mind. Detroit can’t make a profit these days because of fighting innovation & demand for a better product for decades. It will be the same fate for oil and electric companies that don’t move forward into the 21st century.
the only renewable energy currently realistic is electricity.
Exporting electricity from Europe to the US, or vice versa, is impracticable because of the cost and losses involved in the cables.
Exports/import (global trade) only make sence when you can’t produce something locally. The US has far mote resources than Spain, so export to the US would make no sense. (except that the US wants to use more than it’s fair share of resources and can use its miilitary & economic musel to take from the rest of the world without developing its own solutions)
Should Clean Renewable energy be pushed by the USA?
With gas prices and oil money being used by terrorist, and with the Earth naturaul resources slowly being used up. Would it not be smart to look in to other way of producing power? That are not coal or gas related but something that we and use over and over again. What do you think is it a good Idea or do you have something that you think need to be looked into more. If so should the county push thing in that dicertion.
I have had alot of Positive responses to this question. Now I have to ask you would you write to the Government and say you think we a need clean renewal power sorces NOW. Not latier.
If you could buy clean, renewable energy from your utility, would you? And how much cost increase is too much?
There are many utilities in the USA that now offer you the option to buy clean, renewable energy from Wind, Solar, Geothermal and Biomass instead of the normal Coal, Nuclear, Natural Gas, Hydro and Petroleum. If you had this option, would you choose it? Why or why not? And how much is to much of an increase for it?
are main goverments constructing renewable energy plants?
countries like usa and european ones. are they building wind farms and that. what ones?
and also what is the highest renewable energy source for one country?
Does Spain have enough supply of renewable energy to export?
I am looking to find the bilateral relationship between the USA and Spain in regards to energy.
What is the most used form of renewable energy: solar or wind power? (In Maine, USA)?
what is most used form of energy in Maine? Wind vs. Solar Energy? Which produces most megawatts, and which is owned more? No oppinions please, just please have proof. (websites, books ect)
