Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines Are Small, Lightweight And Portable

Author: Al Smitty

The original Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines may certainly have been inspired by the Standard Sewhandy portable designs. In fact, one would not be wrong to say that Singer actually purchased Standard just so that they could get their hands on the amazing Sewhandy designs. Of course, at the time, Standard was also not doing well and so it became easy for Singer to affect the purchase. In any case, there is no denying the fact, that Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines were hugely inspired by the Sewhandy.

So, when looking at the Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines, it should not come as any big surprise to anyone to find that these machines boast of the same designs as were used in the Sewhandy machines. Furthermore, the Featherweight machines were not just copies of the Sewhandy because they incorporated many innovations and improvements that have helped to make this model succeed where the Sewhandy floundered.

Featherweight sewing machines from Singer all have a base made out of aluminum and the arm components are made to ensure that the machine does not weigh much. This is a major departure from the Sewhandy arms that were made out of cast iron and which made those machines very heavy. In addition, the Featherweight machines also have extension tables that can by flipped up and down and when flipped up will help in providing additional work area.

The Featherweight also made use of a lone thumb screw release that was located at the lower pan and which made lubricating the machine a lot easier. Compared to the Sewhandy, which had numerous screws, the single screw in the Featherweight was a major and very innovative feature.

There are many interesting facts related to Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines. For example, these machines were only produced in a few colors which included black, white/green and also beige/tan. So, if you come across a Featherweight that is red or blue or even any other colored, chances are that these machines are either copies or have had their bodies repainted.

Also, in case you want to know the exact manufacturing date of any Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines, you may be disappointed because only Singer knows these dates. The company will however provide information that refers to various dates that relate to serial numbers or different batches that were released to the market at a given time.

The first Singer Featherweight Sewing Machines were introduced at the Chicago World Fair in the year 1933. From that time onward till the middle of the sixties, these machines were produced and bought in big numbers. They were made out of cast aluminum and most were lacquered in one of the few colors that Singer used and the machines were also decorated with the company's signature gold colored decals.

The Featherweight sewing machines from Singer were certainly very durable and these small and lightweight machines as well as their cases provided good use which is why these machines continued to remain popular, even fifty years after they were first introduced.

The bottom line is that these machines are tough, small and lightweight and will almost never weigh more than eleven and bit pounds. It is their lightweight properties and portability that have contributed so much to making Singer Featherweight Sewing Machine so popular.

I have a Small AC generator, the problem is the output voltage is very low.?
Can any anyone help me with this. The generator is a brushless, air-cooled diesel generator without AVR. It is kinda old and it’s made from Japan. The manufacturer is Yanmar.
Can any anyone help me with this. The generator is a brushless, air-cooled diesel 1phase generator without AVR. It is kinda old and it’s made from Japan. The manufacturer is Yanmar. When I test the output with multimeter the reading is about 9VAC. It should be 110AC.

Open up the end of the generator and check the capacitor. It may need to be replaced. You may also have to flash the field if it hasn’t been used for some time.

    Try one of these techniques…
    1. Plug the electric drill into the generator receptacle. If the drill is reversible, move the direction switch to the forward position.
    Start the engine.
While depressing the trigger on the drill, spin the drill chuck in reverse direction. This will excite the field and the generator will now produce electricity. If spinning the chuck one direction does not work, try spinning the chuck in the other direction as you may have the reverse switch positioned backwards.
Use caution not to get your hand or other materials caught in the chuck. As soon as the field is excited, the generator will produce power and the drill will turn on.

    2. If the engine is working fine, but there is no output voltage try this trick. It may work on standard alternator type generators, but not on those which use an inverter. It worked for me in the past, but try at your own risk. First check to ensure that all circuit breakers and fuses are ok. Shut off the engine and remove any cords from the generator. Plug in a cord with bare wires on the other end to one of the 120VAC outlets. Connect one end of the cord to a car battery. Very quickly touch the other wire to the other battery terminal. Do not leave it there longer than to create a few sparks or you may destroy the windings. If the residual magnetism in the alternator had weakened, this may be enough to get it started again.

Yanmar Diesel Generator what is the smallest KVA?

  4. goober says:

The governor controls the speed of the engine to regulate the AC frequency and the regulator controls the excitation of the alternator to control the AC voltage. The governor will not turn off a running engine. 700 / 5000 = 0.14 or 14% of capacity.

I suspect that your generator is not designed to operate well at lower power levels.

Although the key may be used to turn the engine to get it started, once the diesel is started, it does not require electricity to continue running unless it has an electric fuel pump. It does not have an ignition circuit like a gasoline engine.

Look at the manual for the generator (or look it up online) to find out how it is supposed to operate.

Probably would be best to go right to the source – here is the link to Yanmars website. Maybe you should look arond this site to asnwer your question.

How big of a generator do I need?
How many watts would it take to run a small cabin with just basic lights, mini fridge, stove, maybe a small tv…? I was thinking a 6000 watt diesel generator….would running it every day ruin it?

  7. Mick says:

why does a large generator not supply full voltage when using small electrical tools?
Only registers full voltage when there is a relatively large draw on the power. 5kva diesel generator, needs to have a power draw of 700w plus to give full voltage of 220v.
When nothing is connected indicated voltage drops to zero and generator will not switch itself off on key (electric start).

WOW! Where do I begin? I’ve been a Carpenter for a bit now.
Are you going to build it on Sono-Tubes?
You need to know,, Plumb, and Level, and Square.
Which roof will it have? 5/12, 8/12, or 12/12 pitch?
    What space is available?
    Plywood, 2 by 4′s 2by 6′s, 2 by 10′s, 2 by 12′s?? All of those apply to building a comfortable abode.
    Will you insulate it?
You will also need roofing shingles.
That’s where the square comes into factor.
    10 by 10, is 1 square.
Do you want to panel the walls? Sheetrock? Leave them bare?
Their is a lot to consider. You just don’t slap something up.

What should i know for building a little shack?
I want to build a little shack in the bush where i can hang out with friends. Nothing special no plumbing maybe diesel generator very small and possibly a wood stove. What supplies should i use for walls, floor, ceiling and roof. will be built on private land hidden in back roads. This would just be a place to hang out on weekends and not really a place to live. What else should be included and what is important stuff to know

  10. Doug D says:

That should probably be a big enough generator to run what ur describing…The only problem you could have is with the stove. You may have to run it by itself, depending on its size some stoves can pull alot of amps. As far as running it everyday, a diesel engine is made to run pretty much non stop, that is the advantage of a diesel over a gas engine…Hope this helps, any other questions feel free to email or message me…Doug
