in calif, the regulations state that the utility pays a user full price, up to the limit of his use, but no more than that.

Not considering the cost of the technology used for generation, is it feasible to generate renewable energy specifically for the purpose of selling it back to the utility companies?
I’ve been searching for information for quite some time and I’ve been unable to find any that really applies. Yes, in many states homeowners are able to sell surplus energy back to the utilities, but there seem to be extremely low limits on the amount.
Obviously, the large renewable energy farms are negotiating directly with the utilities for buyback of their energy. On a small-scale, is this possible? Are there any resources available for research? I’m located in Ohio if that helps, but I’m considering other locations as well if this is a legitimate possibility.
Based on the first answer, let me add the following details: I’m not concerned with the rate at which they purchase it, the question is whether or not they will definitely purchase it. Or, do you get to the point where they simply disconnect your operation from the grid?
One more addition: I’m not asking if it’s cost-effective, but rather if it’s possible. In this example, let’s just say that I have $50k worth of solar panels laying around. Could I hook them up, connect them to the grid, and sell energy to the utility?

I know that geothermal energy is the type of thing that a lot of people are shy about, but perhaps you can look into that? It may be expensive to start up (I think it’s around $700-1200) but it will provide you with a much longer payback with that inital investment – heat, electricity and water, if you happen to hit a hot aquifer (usually only in parts of MT, ID, WY and sometimes SD).
I know it’s not super cheap, but it really does pay back in the long scheme of things.
looking for the best/easiest way to produce renewable energy for small appliances and lighting on low budget?
ive been looking for ways to produce my own energy and so far most methods seem very complex – being creating solar panels to wind turbines. the best way i’ve seen so far, for me personally, is the bike power generating method. at the moment this method seems a little to expensive but may be something i look to in the near future. i dont mind doing the work though, im not looking for a maintenance free method….just something that gets the job done. if possible i’d really like to be able to store the energy in batteries. so basically im looking to power 3 small lamps, a guitar amp, and perhaps an xbox or television if possible. if any other info is needed feel free to email me or i will add the info to the question.

I don’t know what your intentions are–as backers?… as buyers?……….or………. .
Whatever–I’ve been active in renewable energy sources and conservation and have more than one product in the market but owned by someone else. I’m currently sitting on a couple now but will only be able to fully develop them when I can afford to protect my intelectual property.
