Solar energy is one topic that is receiving increasing interests from legislators, scientists, and even the average persons from all over the world. This is because solar energy is one of what is considered sources of renewable energy, a concept that might spell the survival of the human species in the future. In order for one to know more about this particular energy source, here are the top 10 solar energy websites.On top of the list would be the website of the American Solar Energy Society (ASES), www.ases.org. Because of its untiring work toward promoting this energy through education, the organization is considered a leader in the effort of promoting the use solar energy in the US and in the international community. Apart from presenting news and updates on the organization itself, the site also features articles contained in the Solar Today magazine.
Another solar energy website worth visiting would be www.fsec.ucf.edu/en, the official website of the Florida Solar Energy Center. It provides updates and news on research and developments made by the center toward promoting the use of solar energy in the state.
Education is also the focus of the Solar Energy International, a nonprofit organization that maintains the www.solarenergy.org website. In particular, the organization teaches on designing, building, and installing solar and other renewable energy systems. It offers online as well as actual training on these systems.

What would it take to convert a housing community from fossil fuels to solar energy in the home?
Serious discussion here.
How feasible is the idea of communities, towns, even whole cities being powered by solar energy? At the most, how about these communities being fractionally powered by solar energy; 40% Solar/ 60% Fossil fuels?
We’re not getting all George Jetson, here. We have practical means by which to make something like this happen. My research has lead me to believe the problem comes in with the initial setup.
If this is so, what would it take to materialize the dollars? Should each State solicit a ‘solar energy’ tax; money dedicated to fund R&D solutions for citizens? Is it something that can be solicited to big business in exchange for free plugins; Staples invests in a solar power grid in Downtown Los Angeles… and calls it ‘The Staples Power Center”.

What is a reliable website where I can find detailed information on solar energy or science in general?
(Hopefully it ends in .gov, .org, .edu, etc) but I need to find a reliable and source on solar energy for a science fair project.
Can someone help me understand this statement about Solar Energy?
So I’m reading this article on Wikipedia about Solar Energy. I have to do this project about biofuels, and solar energy is one of them. It says:
“Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive or active depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute sunlight. Active solar techniques use photovoltaic panels, pumps, and fans to convert sunlight into useful outputs. Passive solar techniques include selecting materials with favorable thermal properties, designing spaces that naturally circulate air, and referencing the position of a building to the Sun. Active solar technologies increase the supply of energy and are considered supply side technologies, while passive solar technologies reduce the need for alternate resources and are generally considered demand side technologies.”
I don’t understand what they mean. Do active thinger-majiggers move toward the sun, and passive ones just sit there and absorb the sunlight?

I am trying to use solar energy in four wheeler.###Trying to mount solar pannel on carrier of 4 wheeler and providing solar power to a/c,lighting and music system.This has been sent to govt. since one month ,But I hope nobody will take care of it as my experience says.
I think the difference between “active” and “passive” technologies is this:
Active technologies convert solar energy into useful energy like electricity or heat energy (or hot water) that can be used to heat or light a building etc. WHEREAS passive technologies try to minimise the need for energy to heat, light or cool a building by using clever design in the building itself.
Examples of passive technologies would be window shades to keep rooms cool, or plenty of South-facing windows to keep rooms warm in winter.
Our company took one of those 12 volt John Deere Gator toys that kids ride on, and mounted solar panels on the roof, and it would have to sit in the sun two solid days to charge the battery to where the kid could actually drive it.
It’s only a working idea that they take to schools for energy fairs, and it’s only to inspire. So I know if you are looking to actually power a real car, not even a golf cart (NEV) with solar panels hanging off everywhere, you are going to need to find the latest technology and even then there will likely be a lot of shade with panels hanging way over the roof and hood nearly like an airplane to get it to where you could drive on the generation. It kind of sounds like the National Lampoon’s Vacation Family Truckster, ‘If you think it looks bad, just wait until you drive it…’

Third, for the kind of project you describe, it really comes down to financing. This will be easiest if you are planning to build a new community. Find a lender (bank or government) that will allow home-buyers to roll the solar energy system into their mortgage. This practice, along with a healthy rebate, helped to make Japan the PV capital of the world a few years back.
On a larger scale, many states are enacting renewable portfolio standards which legally require utilities to generate a certain fraction of power from solar, wind or biomass. RPS programs are also described on the DSIRE website listed above.
