    im doing a project for school and it asks what are the problems associated with alternative energy sources.
    now, i know fossil fuels(coal, oil etc…) create greenhouse gasses but solar power, it seems there is nothing wrong with it

    It is actually a nice form of energy. Unfortunately it has a few negatives
    1: Only available during the day (unless power produced goes to storage)
    2: Only produces full power on sunny days
    3: Requires a large array to supply decent amount of power, requiring larger area for the array.
    4: Storage facility (so you have power at night) requires space and maintenance.

    This is where wind is claimed to be better but if the wind dies the generator stops, but if wind it operates day, night, cloudy or rain and usually at night puts power back into the grid and can do so during the day while you’re at work.

    Solar is great for low power demand items like lights (you can now get a variety of low power lighting systems) and chargers for cell phones and other devices. To run larger devices you need a large array and power converters and a power storage (batteries) with enough capacity to supply the demands of your devices. The whole system can be quite expensive but yes in the long run could save you money. Note that storage devices require weekly maintenance and checking for problems as they die after a few years so you have to replace them.

    1. It’s affected by time(day/night), climatic conditions and geographic location.
    2. Initial Investments are high.
    3. All technological developments are made by keeping the conventional energy sources in mind. Thus, solar energy cannot be integrated easily with these technologies involving additional cost.

    Cons of nuclear energy:
    1. Disposal of radioactive waste material is not easy.
    2. Working with radioactive substance is hazardous and can cause genetic mutations in humans if they come in contact with such a substance.
    3. Controlled reactors are required for generating energy so that the fission chain reaction does not go out of proportion.
    4. Radioactive material is rare and available only in a few places of the world.

    All have some advantages and disadvantages.

    Would it make sense to abandon all our current fossil fuel power sources and replace them with windmills and solar panels? Would we see a major decrease in CO2 levels as a result?

    No, it is not possible nor practical.

    Reasons:
    1. Solar only gives you power during the day, if the sun is out. The more cloud cover you have the less solar production you get.
    2. Snow cover on solar panels stops all solar production. Dust and dirt on your solar panels reduces production.
    3. Wind energy from windmills/wind farms depends on weather patterns for good production.
    4. Wind and solar energy production can not match the load for energy use.
    5. At current costs and values, if you do NOT have a subsidy, wind and solar project have a 20 – 30 year simple payback. Life of those projects is often less than 20 – 30 years thus the life cycle cost is a negative, not a positive.

    According to NASA, Dr. Hathaway, we could be headed into a new Dalton Minimum. that would mean global cooling not global warming. If you believe in AGW, then you might want to start lobbying for MORE CO2, not less.

    2.5 Million Mega watts = 2.5 x 10^10 sq yd of solar panels

    2.5 x 10^10 sq yd = 3,097,600 sq mi

    Now you generally rate thee panels at 80% for production. Standard system design offset. So you need to divide that number by 0.8

    Solar Panel area = 3,872,000 sq miles

    To get a constant generation of 2,500,000 mega watts, you will need to make this area still alrger allowing for weather dust snow etc.

    So you have an area approximately 2,000 miles by 2,000 miles. covered 100% by solar collection panels. This does not leave much room in the lower 48 for farms, forests, cities, homes, rivers, lakes…
