Standby Generator: Purchase According to Your Requirements
Author: Article Manager
Today, every business hugely depends on continuous power supply and hence, buying a permanent standby generator for maintaining a constant level of productivity has become a basic requirement of every company. However, buying a durable, efficient standby generator can be a complex task for many. Let us take a look at some of the most important points that you need to take into consideration while picking up the most suitable generator for your business or building and then, maintaining it to ensure its long lasting performance.
Before going out in the market for selecting your standby generator, try to make a list of equipments that you need to put on power and find out their exact wattage. This is quite an important task as it allows you to make the right choice and save a lot on your pocket. Also, check the equipments with large electrical motors as they need a heavy supply of electricity at the time of starting up. During the final calculation of your wattage requirements, ensure to add up the maximum wattage that your appliance demands while getting started.Once this job is done, the second thing you need to focus on is the appropriate brand and model of your standby generator. A wide range of brands are available in the market and hence, there may be a possibility of you getting slightly confused with the right selection for you. Generally, on an average, most standby generators produce wattages ranging from 7KW to 50 KW. However, a few higher end models can also manage up to 100kW, whereas the Industrial sized options can even go as higher as a few megawatts. Hence, check your requirements appropriately and then choose your option. As far as the charges are concerned, the price list mainly ranges from ,000 to over ,000.
And finally, the task of the installation; these standby generators are quite heavy and needs good placement area. Ensure to get your generator installed by a skilled professional only as it needs specialized knowledge of plumbing and wiring. Moreover, it is advised to get a local liquid propane dealer, expert electrician or a plumber for complete professional assistance during the task of your generator installation.

If standby Diesel generator rating is 925kw and actual load on it is @20%. May i use this generator?
rating of standby DG Set: 1156kva,0.8PF,Year of mfg: 1999, Make Cummins,Type C series.
Some basic stats.
Assumptions:
each of the cases are independent problems.
The constant .5/year failure rate is linear throughout the year (normally a failure rate curve of machinery is like a V w/ a chopped off left side.
P(Failure @ 3 Months) = 0.5 / 4 = .125
1) P(1 failure @ 3 months) = 0.125
1-P(failure) = reliability = 1-.125 = 0.875
2) P(First fails AND seconds fails) = 0.125 * 0.125 = 0.015625
Reliability = 1 – .015625 = .984375
3) P(First fails AND Second fails AND Third fails) = 0.125* 0.125 * 0.125 = 0.00193
Reliability = 1 – 0.00193 = 0.998047
Yes, you may use this generator, but you probably would not want to, as a general principle. There are three reasons:
1. The efficiency of the DG is not optimized for such a small load. You will be wasting fuel for the task that you would wish to accomplish.
2. With all the emphasis lately on emissions, you will find that this is a very bad point for emissions vs. load. If this engine uses a turbocharger, it will be running at a very inefficient point. You would be much better choosing a DG set that is more closely matched to the load you are contemplating.
3. The diesel engine. For this type of service, the diesel engine needs to keep peak pressures near the rating point. when you underload a diesel engine as you are suggesting, not only are the emissions bad, but the piston rings will not have an optimal seal; thus you will see increased oil consumption, and possible oil out the exhaust stack.
An electrical power system consists of identical diesel generators?
An electrical power system consists of identical diesel generators, each generator. Has a constant failure rate of 0.5 per year.
Calculate the reliability of the following arrangement-three months after the initial commissioning date.
1. Only one generator operating.
2. Only generator operating, one generator standby.
3. One generator operating, two generators standby.
The only thing I can think of is watch the second Thomas Edison Bio film and pay careful attention to when he is working on lighting up the city using his electric light bulb. He had to synchronize two generators at that point. I’m sure you can find the answer there.
Any Air Conditioning experts out there?
Hello. we are installing a Diesel Generator for running our house. We are off grid. We are buying a Cummins 15 KVA/12KW Prime Power Generator. This generator can supply 23 Amps per phase in the standby mode with a PF of .8
With the normal set up, we can run only 3, single phase 18,000 BTU ACs, one on each phase.
I read somewhere that by installing Power factor Capacitors, we can install more than one AC on each phase.
Do you know anything about that? Is it an easy task or do I need to get an engineering degree for this? I’m some what comfortable with doing electrical work and can do minor calculations as well.
Any help would be really appreciated.

HVAC Tech.: You need an electrical engineer to solve this problem as it does not fit into Heating, venting, or air-conditioning.
1-Do it by your self , to be on safe side , it is required to install (a sequence of operation unit) to avoid starting of more than one unit in the same time . In addition to the power factor capacitor
2-My advice , don’t install more than one unit per phase due to : each unit of 18,000 BTU require 13 Amp FLA
good luck

synchronizing generators?
i am BSEE student, my project study is to synchronize the generator of an hospital, it have a one 313KVA standby-power diesel gen.,and three 100kva transformer. The generator system is operated manually and no ATS or UPS. one more new building is being build so the transformer will be upgrade to a higher vale.
1)what is the new gen. to be buy?(rating, etc.)
2)how i can connect the new gen. to the old gen.?
3)what is the controller so when the new gen. attains its full load the old gen. will start.
These is my title: To synchronize the generator system of the ____ Hospital.
Anyone have a good title?
Thanks.
