What is the difference between a two-phase and a three-phase generator?
I am trying to buy a generator. I see 2-phase and 3-phase generators. What is the difference between them / what do they mean by phase?

    Thank you.

what KVA of three phase generator do you recommene for 240v, 5.8kw, 26amps printer machine?
    Hi experts,
i have a printing machine with rated power 5.8KW, I’m confused of what Generator sets will power this machine. other specifiactions of the machines are 240volts; 26 amps; single phase. there are only 3 phase generator sets available in the market here. can someone tell me what KVa to buy?
    thanks for you contribution.

Ask the manufacturer of the genset. They have software to determine the correct size.

Your load is 5.8kW, but also rated .24kVx26A=6.24kVA

If your load has a large motor in it, then the generator will need to be oversized.

A 10kW single-phase genset probably would work. These do exist, so your best bet would be to find a source for them. Here is one example:

I have never heard of a 3-phase to single-phase transformer. I don’t think they exist. However, a rotory converter could be used in conjuction with a three-phase generator, but that would be a more-expensive path.

what does the neutral do in a three phase generator?
I have been trying to find this out, i understand neutral in a single phase acts as a return to the supply and is connected to ground in case of high voltage…but what does the neutral do in the generator?

For added points for you lucky people…when talking about star and delta connections, is this how a generator can be wired or the load.

    Cheers

  7. Nobody says:

The neutral carries current back if the 3 phases are imbalanced, if they have different currents through each phase.
Generally The transformer or generator will be star. 3 phase loads like big motors can be star or delta, or able to switch between the 2, since delta is more powerful, but also has a large surge when you switch it on, so they may start in star
