Radiators - Vital Part of an Efficient Central Heating Systems

Author: Tal Potishman

They are a vital part of your domestic central heating system, yet radiators rarely make it to the front row of the central heating components list. Central heating systems are often associated with a good boiler and a large cylinder in most people’s minds. However, radiators form a crucial component of the system together with other controls and TRV (Thermostatic Radiator Valves). A well built modern radiator can make a major impact on the performance of your central heating system, as well as have a major visual effect on the look of your rooms.

Radiators are over 150 years old. Franz Sangalli from Germany has registered a patent on radiators in 1855. They are effectively a hollow metal case, normally flat in shape that is attached to the wall of the room. Most UK radiators are made of sheet steel with attached fins to emit more heat.  The heating medium, most frequently water, is pumped into the top of the radiator. The hot liquid emits the heat into the room and as it cools off it drops to the bottom of the radiator and eventually out. The air around the radiator heats up and creates a convection effect drawing in colder air to heat up.

A typical domestic central heating system has a closed loop of pipes (normally copper) that over time develop pockets of trapped air inside them. The source of these air bubbles is either seeping through tiny cracks in the system of a result of chemical reaction that results gasses creation within the closed system. If such gasses (e.g. Hydrogen) are trapped within the central heating loop, it normally remains at the top of the radiator preventing the water from getting there and using the full area of the radiator for heating. In such case it is recommended to ‘bleed’ the radiator from a bleeding screw at the top of the radiator. Radiators on upper floors tend to have more air pockets locked in them, due to the air’s natural inclination to rise to the upper-most point of the loop. As such, top floor radiators will require more frequent bleeding.

Most boiler manufacturers these days require the heating engineer installing the central heating system to power flush the central heating prior to commissioning. This ensures the system is clean from any debris that might have accumulated during the years (for example inner corrosion in older systems). Furthermore, most UK Corgi registered plumbers recommend adding a corrosion inhibitor chemical into the closed loop circulating water, to inhibit production of Hydrogen that would otherwise occur as a result of hot water coming in contact with iron.

The radiator should be sized according to the space to be heated and ensure the temperature is pleasant. Recommended temperature for the living room is 21c and for bedrooms and kitchen 18c. A correctly sized radiator will ensure the boiler is not overworked and is used in the most cost effective way.

Yeah, they’re the anti-greens and always have been. Except for maybe Teddy Roosevelt.

Come November we are going to see a landslide of historic proportions.

Lets hope the Dems keep their heads and don’t blow a historic opportunity.

We subsidize everything under the sun, except for the stuff that matters. If we took subsidies away from oil, airlines, highways and agriculture and let the “free market” work, suddenly alternative energy and local economies would look very attractive.

    edit:

I wish they would have let some first graders in on the Bush-Cheney energy bill. They probably would have done a better job. Lord knows they wouldn’t let anyone else look at it.

White House is putting pressure on BP because voters are putting pressure on it (the spill is already being called Obama’s Katrina).

Shale gas can replace oil for most uses, and there is plenty of it.

But otherwise you are right, politicians (of any persuasion) tend to be out of touch with reality.

Politics should absolutely be for the benefit of the people, because that is the only way that is right and moral and just! But, this is not the case. Politics is actually a big game, and the people are the losers. The people have the numbers, but the people are kept in the dark, and divided, so we are not standing up, as one, against those who have hijacked our government. Until we do, we cannot defeat them. We are all one, and our true power is in realizing this fact…en mass!

Jimi Hendrix once said….When the power of Love, overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace!

Actually, that’s not entirely correct. Corporations do NOT have the right against self-incrimination., for instance.

But if you don’t like them, get Congress to change the law.

I am a coservitive. Yes I am against Obama’s so called plan. My grandson is only 2 years old. What Obama is doing will put his children (my unyet born great grandchildren) still in debt 40-50 years from now. Why would I be thrilled about that?

  6. Liberty against the NWO says:

Why do Corporations have the same rights as Humans?
After this law was illegally passed in 1886, it has been a plague on our democracy. Corporations can claim any amendment right and keep vital information from the public as well as pay off politicians whom have their best interests in mind. Corporations never die, they just get bigger and gain more assets & power. These corporations have gotten so big they control most main media outlets, shut down local businesses with insane price undercutting, keep renewable energy from being a reality, buy politicians that will be their puppets, and will eventually control anyone who is not rich. Are you aware that this is only a few steps away from fascism/feudalism?

Only humans should have human rights. Corporations can have the right to keep trade secrets and that’s it! Thomas Jefferson must be turning in his grave.

Should politics be one big game or should it be for the benefit of the people? What say you?
In its first 40 hours, the new majority of the House of Representatives kept their promise to voters and passed legislation—increasing the minimum wage for the first time in a decade, empowering Medicare to negotiate lower prices on drugs, cutting interest rates on student loans in half, revoking big oil subsidies and using the money to invest in renewable energy—that provided a down payment for a new direction for this country.

These bills are overwhelmingly popular, and are simply common sense reforms. Yet every one of them—and many more—got held up in the U.S. Senate.

Conservatives boast about the “success” of their strategy in discrediting the new majority. As Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott, R-Miss., put it, “the strategy of being obstructionist can work or fail. So far it’s working for us.”

How is it working? It’s dragging the reputation of the Congress down to the level of the failed president. Conservatives lie in the road of progress and then complain that nothing is moving.

This values partisan posturing over reforms vital to the country. It must be challenged.

It’s time to take the gloves off.

The first step is to expose the obstruction to the American people. Let’s urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to force a real filibuster. Keep the bills on the floor and force vote after vote, exposing the obstructionists. We’ll organize in states across the country to insure that their constituents know exactly who is standing in the way of progress.
Proud Conservatives need to learn how to read, the freaking point is that the Senate has obstructed the bills , what a freaking tard
All idiots like the Proud Conservative please refer to paragraph 2 before you open your pie hole and make a fool of yourself
Yeah it tells me that a bunch of mindless idiots who can’t see past the REAL problem forgot to vote straight ticket to get a REAL majority that could effect change
    Indeed, Hendrix also sang
With the power of love anything is possible

    Band of Gypsys………..absolutely GREAT RnR
DC John are you really that stupid? The American people VOTED for this agenda so if that’s ram rodding something it’s the DAMN WILL OF THE PEOPLE , what an idiot

First cap and trade and now blocking renewable energy – are Republicans becoming the UnGreen Party?
With gas prices now averaging a record $4.04 a gallon in the United States, the Senate voted on two bills Tuesday that would have revoked tax breaks for Big Oil and extended tax credits to renewable energy. Proponents of the two measures touted them as vital for consumer relief and transition to new energy sources, but both measures failed to muster the 60 votes needed to proceed.

The first vote, on the Consumer First Energy Act, fell short of cloture by a vote of 51-43. The second, on the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act of 2008, failed by a vote of 50-44. Both votes fell largely along party lines.

Trade organizations that represent renewable-energy firms on the Hill say they’re already seeing a slowing of growth in the sector because companies are hesitant to start new projects without the assurance that these credits will be available.

With Senate Republicans now blocking renewable energy, are they becoming the UnGreens?

  9. Rhoda Kosin says:

Are conservatives against Obama’s stimulus plan?
They’re not against the stimulus plan. They’re against the function of government itself.

The narrow reporting on current Congressional politicking would lead one to believe that conservatives simply want a different bill to be passed. By now it should be clear that this just isn’t the case. The truth is that conservatives want to be sure Obama and his progressive colleagues at all levels of government are not able to do their jobs. Imagine what would happen if Obama succeeded at delivering money to state and city officials to build mass transit, generate renewable energy, and provide affordable health care to the populace. This would be the fulfillment of government’s moral mission – to protect and empower our citizens.

Conservatives will do everything they can to stand in the way of this progress. They are doing more than obstructing a vital infusion of resources to save our economy. That would be sin enough to drive them from public office if their agenda were widely known. The truth is much more disturbing. They are obstructing the capacity of people to come together and solve our problems through the one mechanism that makes this possible – a functioning government.

  10. akelleystr22 says:

Democrats, are you aware that Oil is vital to the world’s economy?
That as to date we have no large scale replacement of oil what-so-ever. That without oil in-addition to not being able to drive your car, you have no food, no water, no clothes, no electric (oil fuels the electric making generators) The few exceptions would be the Amish Farmers. Renewable energy as of yet a pipe dream.

That the White House rant against BP will only not solve the problem but is making it worse, that all our efforts should go into stopping the spill. Aka Bobby Jindal Governor of Louisiana
