What You Need to Know About Windmill Electricity

Author: Mr. Pom

Perhaps one of the most popular alternative sources of energy is windmill electricity. Harnessed using wind turbines, many people in rural areas have been using wind energy since the 19th century, especially in places with open fields and where the wind is strong, like beaches and the shore. Although there is still so much to learn in this field, wind energy is very much available not only in farms but also in small homes. There are wind turbines commercially available for families who wish to save on the rising costs of electricity.

The downside of using windmill electricity is that is unavailable if the wind is not blowing. This means we can only use it as a back-up source of energy. In any case, the energy harnessed from the wind may be stored in batteries, ready for use anytime. However, windmill energy cannot be consistently used as a source of energy on a regular basis or as a primary source of power. For now, scientists are looking for ways to harness energy from the atmosphere even if the wind is not blowing strongly.

Before getting into it, you need to know the parts you need for generating windmill electricity. You cannot just buy commercial wind turbines that are twice as big as your house. First, you need to buy rotor blades. These are the blades that rotate when the wind hits them and in turn, this rotates the shaft. The shaft, on the other hand, is the part that serves as the connection between the rotors and the part where the wind energy is stored. The storage device used in windmill electricity is the battery. The last part you need is the generator. You cannot use wind energy without a generator because you need conductors to put this energy into actual use.

How to build a windmill and how it works?
My friend and I have a science project for school and we want to build a model showing the different processes to create energy in a windmill. It shouldn’t really be that big. Also, we were looking up the process and it basically says that the wind turns the blade which is connected to some sort of drive shaft which goes to an electric generator. So, we were sort of confused on what an a drive shaft and electric generator were. In addition, if you know the process in more detail that would be a GREAT help! Thank you!

It is simple , and i will try to explain , driveshaft is the pin that holds the blades , a electric generater is like a electric engine , where you turn the blades and make power instead of using power to turn the blades .

in the back of your PC is a fan , that cools the Computer , a small 12 V engine that turns blades to make wind to keep your computer cool . ( just have a look ) it is normaly noisy so you can easly find it.

well a windmill is just like that , where the blades are slightly differend since you do not want to create wind , but you want the blades to turn the shaft that turns the generator

What is the expected energy output of a windmill under these terms?
If a windmill of 330 feet in diameter creates 2 megawatts of energy when the wind is blowing at a constant 20 MPH – should the outcome be proportionality the same if the windmill is smaller? For example: a windmill of 2.5 feet should be expected to create approximately .015 megawatts of energy with a constant 20 MPH wind speed.

What type of a simple machine is a windmill?
    a) What type of a simple machine is a windmill?
    b) How does a windmill work to grind grain?

  5. odzookers says:

“Wind Energy” is produced by the wind, not a windMILL. A windmill converts the wind into MECHANICAL energy, at one time just left that way to turn a wheel that would grind grain or pump water. Today’s versions turn wind energy into mechanical energy to run a turbine and generate electricity. D’oh.

  6. aclrfp says:

To be honest, I need more info to answer, but I will try and “wing it”.

Yes, size would have an effect on output, but what about surface area, pitch of the blades, number of blades.

Imagine if you will a bicycle wheel that you have put some playing cards in the spokes to act as a windmill. If you increased the number of cards, would it not capture more wind? What would happen if you changed the pitch of the cards? Could you get a smaller wheel to capture as much wind energy as the bigger wheel?

Since the improved efficiency is what would make it marketable, not what it looks like, a utility patent would be the one to get. One might want to pursue both, but if form follows function the utility patent would probably be enough.

[EDIT] I should clarify, I’m talking about US patents, since I an in the US and since you write in English I just assumed.
In the US there isn’t (as far as I know) an “inventive patent”, a utility patent covers the practial or functioal aspects of an invention.

  8. iknowit says:

A windmill’s blades can be thought of as being either an interrupted wheel and axle or as many levers around one fulcrum. This is because a wheel and lever are fundamentally the same – a wheel and axle can be thought of as infinitely many levers sharing a fulcrum, and a lever can be thought of as the opposite.

A windmill harvests wind energy to spin grindstones that grind grain between them as the spin against each other.

  9. hearts_and_skulls says:

What kind of energy does a windmill produce?
Also its probably a stupid question but does it use wind energy to make energy? And it doesn’t matter what type of windmill it is just give me a couple of different types of energy it can produce.

    Please and Thank You!

  10. Sharp Shooter says:

What kind of patent would i use to patent a windmill blade design?
I designed a every efficient windmill blade design. it is more efficient then the blades on commercial windmills. What kind of patent would i need to geutilityity or design?
