Wind Energy - Turbines For Home Use
Author: Doctor_john
When we think of using wind energy many of us immediately picture the wind farms with hundreds of gigantic wind mills scattered across acres of land. The good news is that you too can harness the wind and generate electricity right in your own backyard.- Many people don't realize it but wind turbines come in all shapes and sizes. I've seen several in my local community that are attached to rooftops and almost look like some sort of sculpture. They're small, compact, and even attractive which is why several local businesses that have converted to wind power for their electricity needs.
- Y0u can use these same principles for your home. A small, home sized, turbine can be purchased for between 0-,000, or you can build your own for a few hundred dollars. It will only take a day or two to build and you can even make it into a family project.
- One small turbine can cut your electric bill by up to 80%. That is significant especially when you remember that that savings will go on as long as you keep your turbine running.
There is something you need to keep in mind though, one turbine won't supply your home with all the power it needs. You will still need to buy some of the electricity you use.
- To save even more electricity you can install several turbines and/or combine your wind power with solar power and install solar panels too. Between these two sources of renewable energy you'll be able to utilize a wider range of resources: on days when there is no wind you can use the sun and vice a versa.
No matter what you choose to do: buy a turbine, build your own turbine, have multiple turbines, or combine wind energy with solar energy, you still have a viable option when it comes to going green and saving money, just pick the option thats right for you and start today.

How do Wind Turbines convert wind into energy?
I am doing a project for school (its not for a class but its for a teacher me and my friends hang with at lunch) and it has to do with renewable energy. and I need to know how wind turbines convert wind into usable energy.
also if you can tell me how they convert the tides’ and suns’ natural energy into energy used for everyday appliances like lightbulbs and machines.
thanks in advance!
thanks for all the great answers!!!
I think this is the most amount of answers I have ever gotten when I’ve asked a question.
How long will it take for wind turbines to take over and provide the energy to power our country?
Wind turbines that are strategically placed around the would harvest wind energy 24/7 with out using a drop of oil except say for the occasional maintenance crew that has to drive up to the turbine.
Which candidate will push us further and harder in to the new age where we don’t depend so much on foreign oil.
How many bats die annually do to wind energy turbines?
i need the most recent data please this is the only hole people can seem to poke in my debate case is bat deaths and that’s because i can’t seem to find an argument against it so please give me information with a low number or a way to counter this.
Do you think the large wind turbines for wind energy are unsightly?
I have heard that many people believe the wind turbines are ugly and should be kept out of the view of homes. I believe they are beautiful and are necessary. What do you think?
What forms of energy and energy transformations are involved in wind turbines?
Hey
Im doing a research about wind turbines and how it generates energy using wind power
I need to know the energy conversions involved in the process of the wind turbines.
Im not quite sure on what forms of energy are involved
Here are all of the forms of energy:
thermal, electrical, radiant, nuclear potential, gravitation potential, kinetic, elastic potential, sound, and chemical potential.
I also need to know the wind turbines energy transformation equation.
For example a microwave oven,
electrical energy -> radiant energy -> thermal energy
Please help
help will be greatly appreciated and rewarded with points ofc
The mass and velocity of the air give it KE
The wind turbine blades convert the KE to ME (mechanical energy; the one you left out of your list of ‘all’ the forms of energy…!)
The generator converts the ME to electrical energy, the most useful grade of energy.
At each conversion point, some of the input energy is not used, causing the output energy to be less than the input. For ex: The wind downstream of the blades is slowed, but not stopped. Ergo, it still has some of its KE and the blades have picked up the rest as ME. As I recall, the maximum efficiency of any blade system is about 36%. The ME to EE step is about 90% efficient. Of course, all the efficiencies multiply, so you come out with less than 36%, but considering that the original wind energy is created directly from solar heating of land masses (ie, free), things don’t look so gloomy…….
I think they are beautiful and should count as a sculpture. It is a perception issue. We are a glutenous nation and we tolerate smog, but not wind turbines or solar panels.
Common sense is your best argument. I doubt you’ll find any statistics on it due to the over whelming lack of evidence to support the rebuttal. A bat can navigate through darkness better than a human can in broad day light. Scientific fact. The following link is an absurd attempt to pull at your heart strings, linking bat deaths with wind turbines. The most amazing part of it and absurdity is, that they claim wind turbines create a change in air pressure forcing the lungs in these critters to explode. This is pure cock and bull. Air pressure changes all the time for various reasons. A passing thunderstorm will change air pressure. Weather is caused by changing air pressure. Even if this science fiction drama was true, one could simply fall back on the reliability that evolution will give bats better lungs. Aside from that, wind turbines DON’T have to resemble airplane propellers. They can be constructed with the blades in a cylindrical fashion running vertical or horizontal. Activists are never a happy sort, they will do anything to fight against the establishment no matter what changes.

From what I’ve seen Democrats seem to be pushing harder for clean energy than the Republicans have. From what I’ve seen on the 2 candidates, O’Bama seems to be going in the direction I want to see the country go.
Wind turbines take the energy in moving air (wind) and converts it to electrical power with a generator. The force of the wind on the blades of the windmill (wind turbine) causes it to rotate with a force (like a toy pinwheel if you blow on it). This rotational force causes a generator to turn. Magnets in the generator causes an electrical current to flow. This electrical current is used to power things such as light bulbs.
Wind energy ultimately comes from sunlight. The weather is powered by the sun heating the ground and water which causes air to heat up and rise (or water to heat and evaporate). These moving currents of air and water vapor are the basis for all weather (and wind is of course part of the weather). You can use something very much like a wind turbine in the water to harness tidal power. Tidal power is caused by the gravitational drag from the Moon and Sun on large bodies of water such as the Oceans. Tides cause water to rise and fall. If you have an bay or inlet where water flows during a tidal change, you can put a water turbine to power a generator from the flow of the incoming or outgoing tide.
