Electricity is a primary need, we all know that. Every day, we consume electricity even without us knowing it. Today, most of our electric generators and power plants are fed with fossil fuels such as petroleum and coal. However fossil fuel supplies are slowly being depleted and the byproducts of burning these fuels are greenhouse gases.  Now there is a necessity for cleaner, alternative energy sources. One such energy sources is Wind Powered Generators.

A wind powered generator is basically a motor that utilizes the wind to create the mechanical force to a power an electric generator.   There are however, advantages and disadvantages with wind powered generators. Here's are some of them.

Advantages of Wind Powered Generators

  • The main advantage of wind powered generators is that they create zero gas emissions
  • As there is no burning process, thus no toxic gases, wind powered generators are very safe to build in residential areas
  • Wind powered generators can provide a high rate of wattage, within the Megawatt range.
  • Several small turbines can be installed and connected together, saving on land space and the need to build huge structures

Disadvantages of Wind Powered Generators

  • The major disadvantage is that the wind varies greatly from one place to place, from day to day and also season to season.  Some days there is enough wind to create energy, but on others there is not enough wind due to the changes in weather patterns. A constant, strong wind is need to power wind generators effectively and efficiently. This is why most wind powered generators are built in coastal areas.
  • The structure of most wind powered generators needed to capture the wind energy, is generally huge and bulky. Its size is directly proportional to the amount of wind power it needs to collect. So to power a major city many, huge structures will need to be built to capture the wind energy.

Research in wind power has now intensified because of its innate advantages over other fossil fuel power generators. With this increase in interest in wind energy and alternative energy sources as a whole, our future will become brighter and more and more remote areas will eventually enjoy the benefits of clean electric energy.

    A homeowners association won’t allow certain visible changes to the houses. Including wind powered generators?
    And solar roof panels, and reflective roof or window insulation. They say changes like the above (along with rusted wrecks of autos in the yard, of course) will lower property values. So who’s right, the association or green living advocates? Let’s say moving to a dif neighborhood is not an option. Thanks.

    The association is correct, both legally and logically.

    I live in a wind mill happy state and there is no possible way a city would give you permission to build a wind mill in your bank yard.

    You should be able to put in low-e windows, which do the same thing as the reflective ones without looking awful.

    A low RPM low voltage DC motor is commonly used by boaters.You will need a diode and a battery,and an asymmetrical propeller.Turn the tail of the generator into the wind to slow or stop the prop.It is also beneficial to have some type of drain on the system IE.,a light or radio always on.Ground the system with a lot of zinc.The motor I used for many years was a 420 rpm 34 volt dc motor to charge a 12 volt system.

    It’s simply an engineering design decision. One could just as easily design a wind generator which turns in a counter-clockwise direction. The industry would naturally standardized on one or the other, however, in order to improve manufacturing efficiency and foster interoperability between component suppliers. Since there is no benefit to turning in one direction or the other, it would make no sense for suppliers to support manufacturing capacity for two different designs. In this way, standardization of components can also help to lower costs.

    One problem may lie with rotational speed. The gas engine ran at thousands of RPM. The wind turbine will be running much slower, so you need to use gears or pulleys to change the speed to match that of the generator. Now the question is do you have enough power from the wind turbine to drive the gears and the generator?

    Depends on the size of the turbine and the size of the generator.

    One additional point, the generator, I suspect, is a 60hz 120 volts AC generator. Running it slower than designed for will produce lower voltages and lower frequency output, which will not be able to be used for anything except light bulbs. Even if you get to output the correct voltage and frequency, as soon as the wind changes slightly, the voltage and frequency will change again.
