    I want to buy an Electric Power Generator and im not 100% sure how they work.?
    I want to buy an electric power generator but the only ones i found required gasoline. is there any generator that starts off charged and keeps itself charged? if so where could i buy one? also i need about 5000+ watts, im planning on using this for a room with a bunch of electronics. i probably need more than one. i dont care how much they are. please help me find this, i cant find it anywhere. (also if there isnt just a regular generator that doesnt require anything, what are the alternatives? i just need something that is an alternative to plugging it in the wall. solar power, generator, windmill, anything. please help me) thank you :)
    ok sooo theres a way to use a windmill anndd solar panels and possibly get around 5000 watts? i need some links to this stuff because i have no idea what to look for. thanks for the responses btw :)

    Whenever I pass a wind farm. Why are less than 1/2 of these windmills generators running at any one time. I suppose it is because that they are down for maintenance or repairs. That would seam a logical guess but I have never met anyone who I could ask that might know. With all the recent interest in alternative power (not to mention the “Picken’s Plan”) I was thinking that someone would have mentioned it. Do these wind power generators break down frequently and will they need to be less tempermental and more sturdy before thay can be cost effective?

    is there a mini-windmill or mini wind-generator?
    i want to get off-grid. we have lots wind on the coast. but the blades i looked at are huge and the poles are way too tall. just a small one in the yard would catch a lot of wind and spin. i only need at least 750 watts, but 1000 watts preferrably. is there a small wind generator or can someone link me to building plans for something like this? some freeplay machines i’ve searched for only make about 50 watts. thank you…

    At 1000 watts, it is NOT a mini.
    To get 1000 watts at 120V, you need 8 amps.
    To get the same watts at 12v you need 80 amps.
    THIS is assuming 100% efficiency. (NO conversion is 100% efficient, most are about 60% on smaller systems!)
    Therefore you would need to generate aproximately 132 amps at 12v to allow for the losses in conversion to 120V.

    NOTE: MOST automobile generators (alternators) only supply 60 amps, and the most common small wind units even less!!

    Wind generators need to be a MINIMUM of 20 feet ABOVE any obstructions to wind flow within 100 yards, and HIGHER is BETTER. When you take into account trees, houses, etc. that usually means about 100 feet in the air MINIMUM, AND the unit must be able to withstand the wind forces.

    There are many sites which can be found by searching “wind generators” where you can buy generators, parts, find plans etc.

    If you don’t care how much it costs, your best (as in quietest and least obtrusive) option is a heap of solar panels, a fat battery bank and a multi-kilowatt inverter.

    Anything that gives you electricity OUT is going to require a substantially greater amount of energy IN.  Gasoline, wind, sunlight… always more in than out, the proportion depending on which one you use (wind will be most efficient).  You cannot get something for nothing.  I wrote a blues about it once.

    Edit:  You don’t really understand your own needs.  You say you need 5000 watts, but that’s a measure of power (like horsepower).  How much time each day do you need it?  What you need to calculate is how many kilowatt-hours you need per day (like gallons per day).

    This makes a huge difference.  If you are running a 3000 watt well pump for a total of 20 minutes a day, that’s 1 kilowatt-hour (3000 watts * 1/3 hour) a day or an average of just 42 watts.  If you are running a 5000-watt light show for 12 hours a day, that’s 60 kWh/day…. 60 times as much energy.

    Determining the required size of the various generating options, batteries and so forth are way beyond the scope of Y!A, so you should go pick up something like “Home Power” magazine and start reading up.

    Ask the same question of a standard power supply system.

    Power is created to suit requirements. At a certain time of day, say after work has finished, requirements go up. This is reflected in the operation of the supply station.

    If you figure it; storing electricity is a pretty difficult and expensive operation. It also requires added space to store the electrical storage devices. It therefore makes sense to create only the necessary supply.

    This job is reliant upon the skill of the power supply staff.
