    With wind the difference between messing around and saving power is whether or not it is attached to the grid. This requires a more expensive power inverter (a regular non synchronized one from the store will explode). Once attached to the grid your system doesn’t need as many expensive batteries since you can sell to the power company when its windy and buy when its not.

    The old fashioned farm windmill that pumped water had a whole disk full of blades and was optimized for pumping water at low wind speeds. A lot of blades makes this windmill have a lot of torque at low wind speeds. At higher wind speeds, the water pump windmill does not generate much more power. Why? Because it is so full of blades that the air can’t get through, so almost all the wind goes around the windmill instead of through the blades. A high speed windmill has even more of this effect. The airfoil blades efficiently extract power from the wind, but if you add blades to try to extract more power from the wind, you slow the air down too much and more of the wind goes around the blades instead of through them. The term for how much of the windmill swept area is filled with blades is called solidity. The American farm windmill had a solidity of 80%. The most efficient number of blades for a high speed modern wind turbine is two blades and rotors with three blades are a little less efficient. Three bladed rotors are preferred on small to medium sized windmills because of a dynamic stability issue with a two bladed rotor. When the wind changes direction and the windmill tries to turn the rotor toward the new wind direction, a two blade windmill steers easily when the blades are vertical but is hard to turn when the blades are horizontal. If the rotor is turning while the windmill steers into the wind, a bad oscillation can develop and cause the rotor to yaw unevenly. On really large windmills, dampers or teetering hubs dampen out this effect.

    ………….I lived on my sailboat for 15 years in the Caribbean…. I always relied on my trusty windbugger to keep my batteries up when I was at anchor which was most of the time I found more and more sailors switching to the air X generator….. so If I was to buy one again for land I would go with the air X…….land model or a windbugger who also makes land models…..
