It was at this Colorado "Experimental Station" that Nikola Tesla had some early success in wireless power transmission. In one of his demonstrations, photographs show that "a small incandescent lamp was lighted by means of a resonant circuit grounded on one end, all the energy being drawn through the earth" from the nearby transmitter. When Nikola Tesla invented the AC (alternating current) induction motor, he had great difficulty convincing men of his time to believe in it. Thomas Edison was in favor of direct current (DC) electricity and opposed AC electricity strenuously. Tesla eventually sold his rights to his alternating current patents to George Westinghouse for ,000,000. After paying off his investors, Tesla spent his remaining funds on his other inventions and culminated his efforts in a major breakthrough in 1899 at Colorado Springs by transmitting 100 million volts of high-frequency electric power wirelessly over a distance of 26 miles at which he lit up a bank of 200 light bulbs and ran one electric motor! With this soaped up version of his Tesla coil, Tesla claimed that only 5% of the transmitted energy was lost in the process. But broke of funds again, he looked for investors to back his project of broadcasting electric power in almost unlimited amounts to any point on the globe. The method he would use to produce this wireless power was to employ the earth's own resonance with its specific vibrational frequency to conduct AC electricity via a large electric oscillator. When J.P. Morgan agreed to underwrite Tesla's project, a strange structure was begun and almost completed near Wardenclyffe in Long Island, N.Y. Looking like a huge lattice-like, wooden oil derrick with a mushroom cap, it had a total height of 200 feet. Then suddenly, Morgan withdrew his support to the project in 1906, and eventually the structure was dynamited and brought down in 1917.
Incandescent bulbs burn high resistance filaments that gobble up energy. Fluorescent tubes burn filaments (cathodes) to create an electrical flow that sets their internal phosphorus coatings aglow. Using a Tesla coil, high voltage AC can light up glass-enclosed vacuum bulbs coolly without any gases inside them at all! Any number of cold light bulbs can be lit using only one Tesla coil, and since there is nothing inside them to burn out, they can last indefinitely. It seems like a low cost form of street lighting, doesn't it?When Tesla was determining the resonant frequencies of the earth to potentially transmit unlimited electric power, he also recognized frequencies that acted as a damping field to nullify electric power. With the advent of the wireless and Tesla's unique investigations into broadcasting electricity, a dozen or more inventors thereafter announced their own means for transmitting electrical energy without wires. One British inventor, H. Grindell-Matthews, actually demonstrated his "mystery ray" apparatus in 1924 to a Popular Science Monthly writer in London (See: Pop. Sci. Monthly, Aug. 1924, P. 33). When his beam was directed toward the magneto system of a gasoline engine, it stopped the system. Afterwards, it ignited gun powder, lit an electric lamp bulb from a distance and killed a mouse in seconds! Grindell-Matthews said the secret was involved with the "carrier beam" he used to conduct a high-voltage, low-frequency electrical current. During 1936, Guglielmo Marconi experimented with extremely low frequency (ELF) waves and displayed their exceptional ability to penetrate metallic shielding. These waves could affect electrical devices, overload circuits and cause machines like generators, electric motors and automobiles to stall. Diesel engines, which do not rely on electrical ignition, were not affected. Mysteriously, Marconi's research on the subject was never found after the war.

Wireless electricity?
So I was reading about this new thing they have where we’re going to be able to charge our laptops/phones/etc. with wireless electricity transfers

Magnetic coupling is most efficient when the radiator is verry close to the powered device.
Can the modern day technology produce a wireless electricity?
It can… but its not use full.
Resistance in air is so high that you need super high voltages which makes it dangerous and as good as uncontrollable.
The spark plugs in a car for example need 10.000 volts to create a lightning flash over 1-2 mm. (.005-. 01 inch) When you’d have a cordless phone with no batteries and stand 2.5 cm(1inch) to close to the generator the phone itself would be fried and you probably as well.
On the other hand…. one can make a working radio with just a few components without… a battery or solar panel.
It’s powered by radio waves ! The transmitter and radio do contain wires however and charging a single aaa-cell with that power would take decades.
Is it possible now or in the near future to supply electricity through some means of wireless technology?
Does end of fuel mark the end of technology and eventually human race ?
With the madenning spree that the modern civilization is utlilizing fuel, there is little hope that the end of petrol/fuel would mark the end of all this technology (electricity, wireless comm, tech gadgets, vehicles). So, imagining the fuelless life on earth is pathetic as all of us have become so dependant of this form of energy. So might argue about solar/nuclear energies but don’t you feel these are too limited to be exploted ?
So, we might end up dying without food in the long run, or the corporate offices and huge structures which were built will be electricity less and eventually no body would be able to travel. So, this present way of exploiting fuel is leading us to a global suicide.(atleast future generations are going to suffer). What do you think ?
You’re scenario is right around the corner. In 50 years, we’ll be at 10 billion souls at our current rate of growth. there’ll be zero fossil fuels, zero coal and other natural resources. Wars will be fought over water. The burgeoning populations will be mostly in the third world countries.
Will technology save the day?……maybe. Will we change our ways and avoid the impending train wreck?….doubtful. Will there be some cataclysmic event that will bring us back down to more sustainable levels, say 3 billion?…..probably.
How would you use wireless electricity?
Intel is developing wireless electricity, which is transferred not through wires, but through the magnetic spectrum. If you had access to this technology today, how would you use it?
To be perfectly specific, no, it is not possible to supply electricity without a conductor to carry it. However, this does not mean that you cannot supply energy from one electrical device to another without using wires; what has to be done is to have one side produce some sort of electromagnetic wave which the other side then absorbs and uses the energy to make electricity.
A simple example would be a laser and a solar panel: you attach a source of electricity to the laser, it produces high-energy electromagnetic waves (light), which are transmitted through space to the solar cell, which converts those waves to electric energy and can run an electric device.
This basic concept can be used with any “band” (frequency range) of the electromagnetic spectrum. One use of wireless power which is very interesting and useful is inductor links. An inductor is an electrical circuit component which basically takes a changing electric field (AC power) and converts it to a changing magnetic field. If another inductor is somewhat close to the first, it converts that changing magnetic field back into a changing electric field in its circuit, which can be used to charge a battery or run the circuit. This is used in applications such as when people have implanted medical devices, so they do not have to have wires going through their skin. I would bet that it is also the technology behind the wireless cell phone charging mechanism that someone else noted.
